“The Mayor” Has Not Disappointed – Premiers to Great Reviews All Across

ABC and Creator Jeremy Bronson have combined well, many will agree, to give audiences the best broadcast show this year – an endearingly funny, if not downright hilarious, political satire.

Young Rapper Courtney Rose, played by Brandon Hall, runs for mayor in his California hometown simply to promote his mixtape – the thought of victory far from his mind. However, as fate would have it, an onstage debate in which he demolishes a genuine candidate, wins him the Mayor’s office. This is when the real fun begins!

Following the win, his vanquished opponent’s campaign manager Valentina, played by Lea Michele, joins the new Mayor’s staff.

Michelle and Hall share great chemistry, effortlessly drawing laughs with subtle political jokes.

The Mayor pilot has all the hallmarks of a good sitcom, including a brilliant concept and great characters portrayed by an able cast. It tickles, and amuses, and draws laughter without going overboard with the political jokes.

Hall is pretty convincing, both as a struggling rapper and the man who could make a difference in the local administration.

Lea Michelle as Valentina “Val” Barella is equally convincing in her character as the somewhat uptight mayoral manager, as opposed to the free-spirited character of the mayor. Both have done justice to their parts.

“It really is [the greatest cast],” Lea Michele told E! News. “You really hope when you go to work every single day that you love the people that you are with, because you’re up close and personal 14, 16 hours every single day. So it’s really been such a joy and such a blessing that we get along the way that we do, and that we did from jump.”

“I’m such a fan of Daveed Diggs,” she told E! News, referring to the show’s executive producer. “Bringing those two things together, politics and music and family and heart all combined, I really felt like it had all of the elements to be such a fantastic show.”

Yvette Nicole Brown plays the rapper-mayor’s more than funny mom Dina – another noteworthy performance!

“I learn something from Yvette Nicole Brown every day I’m around her,” Hall told E! News. “Every day I’m around her, no matter if it’s doing press, no matter if it’s going shopping to Bed, Bath and Beyond.”
