Gigabyte Aero 15X v8 (2018) Review

You may be familiar with last year’s Gigabyte Aero 15X, but the new generation Gigabyte Aero 15X v8 is now set to take over as the top-of-the-line 15-inch gaming laptop.

One of the most powerful in the category today, this super thin high-end laptop, with a notably small form factor, is the first to use Intel’s new 8th-generation Core i7 laptop processor.

The total carry weight of this laptop, power adaptor included, is around 6.4 pounds (2.9 kg) – a weight that shouldn’t be much of a problem for most users to carry around for longish durations.

The dimensions of this impressive piece of technology from Taiwan-based Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd is 356mm x 250mm x 18mm (L x W x H), which makes it relatively easy to pack away in most bags.

It’s definitely a more portable option to the 25mm thick Alienware 15, which weighs in at a hefty 3.5kg.

To start with, the laptop boasts some very impressive specifications, such as a powerful Nvidia GTX GPU, a brand new Intel 6-core processor, Thunderbolt RGB backlit keyboard, a powerful battery and a super thin bezel on the monitor, and much more. Of course, we will look into each one of these in greater detail.

When reviewing a laptop, there’s no better place to start from than the screen, because all the components within the system work in unison to give you that perfect onscreen experience. It is the screen that your eyes are glued to during most of your interaction with the machine.

With no room at the top of the screen, owing to the super thin bezel on the 15.6-inch display of the Gigabyte Aero 15X v8, the high definition webcam is set below the display along with the integrated microphone – a trick not much different from the one adopted by Huawei on its new MateBook Pro; it’s just that Huawei chose to hide the webcam in one of the function keys.

The ultra-thin bezel on the 1920 x 1080 pixel HD resolution monitor, along with the 144 Hertz refresh rate, makes the v8’s screen one of the best in gaming devices today, minimizing motion blur and giving enhanced response to quick reactions.

The overall build quality of the Gigabyte Aero 15X v8 is exceptionally good, with an aluminum lower panel and a sturdier lid that flexes notably less under pressure.

As far as connectivity options are concerned, there is the RJ 45 port for your network connectivity; then you have a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port and a mini display port – all this on the left-hand side edge of the laptop.

On the right-hand side, you have your multi-card reader, USB Type C port for Thunderbolt, two additional USB 3.0 ports and, of course, the AC|DC lightning port for charging.

Now, let’s take a good look inside and outside for some hardware facts.

As should be expected on a gaming laptop, Gigabyte gives you a full-blown Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU inside the v8; however, the real thing here is Intel’s 8th generation Coffee Lake CPU – the i7-8750H six-core processor.

And, as is the unwritten norm, no high-end gaming laptop is ever complete without an elaborate light-up gaming keyboard.

Unlike previous iterations of backlit keyboards, which are usually split into three zones, each and every key on the Gigabyte Aero 15X v8’s RGB backlit keyboard can be customized individually.

Open up the laptop and you’ll see the incredibly large 6,200 mAh Li-Polymer battery pack – the force behind the extended battery life this laptop promises.

And, then there’s the M.2 form factor SST here for the Operating System, along with the G. SKILL Ripjaws system RAM.

With one slot open, memory expansion is not an option on the Gigabyte Aero 15X v8.
