“Fuller House” Star John Stamos to Become First-Time Dad at 54

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE’s Editor-in-Chief Jess Cagle on the latest episode of “The Jess Cagle Interview,” 54-year-old John Stamos revealed that his fiancée Caitlin McHugh, 31, is pregnant with his child.

Check out the magazine’s cover story this week for the full interview.

He told Cagle that he and McHugh had talked about starting a family together and things turned out for the better as they share the same “morals” and “values.”

“We have the same morals and the same values, that all clicked nicely,” Stamos said. “So we said, ‘Oh, well, maybe we should have a family’.”

When his fiancée suggested that they should have a baby before they got married, the “Fuller House” uncle responded with a “Why?” to which McHugh responded, “Because you’re old,” which he claims was said in jest. Well maybe, but isn’t that the truth!

“I always wanted to be a dad,” he told PEOPLE, adding that he wasn’t really prepared for it – well not until now.

“Clearly I had to do some work on myself, first. I have a youthful thing. People say, ‘Oh, you look young.’ You’ll start believing you’re gonna live to be 150. And then you wake up and go, ‘No, man, this is it. This is not a rehearsal’.”

While people thought he looked young, he saw himself as too old for fatherhood.

“People would say, ‘You should have a child.’ I was like, ‘That ship has sailed’.”

But as it were, McHugh got pregnant. “Then, I said I better have a ring on her finger because it’s the right thing to do, and I wanted to marry her anyway,” he said. “So I called her parent to ask, and it was like, ‘You better!’”

The couple has kept the baby’s sex a secret – for now, at least.

The ageless actor had popped the question in October at his favorite theme park, Disneyland.

“Uncle Jesse” shared that happy moment with his 2.2 million followers posting an illustration of himself embracing his wife-to-be against the magical backdrop of Sleeping Beauty’s castle, captioning the Instagram post with, “I asked…she said yes! …And we lived happily ever after.”

Following his lady love’s nod, they had moved on to Disney’s 21 Royal restaurant to celebrate the occasion with their families.

Stamos is a known Disneyland fan and has been a regular at the theme park with McHugh, who herself is a huge “House of Mouse” fan.

Previously married to model and actress Rebecca Romijn from 1998 to 2004, the hunky dude first dropped a hint about his relationship with McHugh when he appeared on “The View” back in March of 2016.

While the Fuller House uncle had been pretty much discreet about his growing romance with Caitlin, his prettier half was more forthcoming about the love affair with some of her Instagram posts.

A short film “Ingenue-ish,” this year, saw the couple working together as director and actress respectively – a film the couple had written together.

“They say if you can do a film together, you can do anything together,” McHugh told “Entertainment Tonight” in January.

“We like to keep our lives private because we’ve seen what relationships in the public eye can be like and we just like our privacy,” she had said. “We don’t want the commentary from the masses about what our relationship is or should be. We’re very happy together and we hope to be so for a long time.”
