Top Five World Cities’ NYE Celebrations Ushering in 2019

From spectacular fireworks and dazzling light shows to dancing in the streets and all-around revelry, millions around the world assembled in streets, parks and public squares to cheer the advent of yet another year.

Here’s a recap of New Year’s Eve celebrations in five world cities that stood out, although there are tens of others that can easily find a place in this list of five.

Sydney, Australia – Great Fireworks, Wrong Year

Sydney, one of the first cities to usher in 2019, awed spectators around the world with a spectacular twelve-minute pyrotechnics display above its most famous landmark – the Sydney Harbour.

However, the organizers goofed up the $4miilion extravaganza, big time, by getting the year all wrong – a glaring typo that social media users were quick to pounce on.

Can you spot the mistake? Pic: @michvllv

Norbert Schoffa tweeted: “Wow, I will move to Australia ! So I will be one year younger !”

Izzy Erskine: “Oh no it’s 2018 again.”

Neil Clark: “Happy New Year 2018… Wait, have I got that wrong?”

Angus Randall: “Oops.”

Alex Bruce-Smith: “I take no pleasure in other people’s typos considering I make one every second word, but also…. lol.”

Sydney New Year’s Eve executive producer Anna McInerney put up a brave front by trying to see the funny side of the four-million-dollar gaffe.

“We just laughed about it, you know these things happen as we said, it takes 15 months to organise an event of this size and scale,” McInerney told reporters.

“Obviously, we weren’t pleased, but look you move on and you just get back to doing the show,” she said.

Auckland, New Zealand

Like Sydney, Auckland was among the first world cities to celebrate the start of 2019 as fireworks erupted into the night sky from the top of the 328-meter-tall Sky Tower.

Tens of thousands of revelers had gathered around the iconic structure for the spectacular show, which was very much worth their while.

While the fireworks enthralled the crowd for five minutes, the light show continued until 1 a.m.

Apart from one minor firework-related call to the Northern Fire and Emergency Service, the event was, thankfully, incident-free, as was confirmed by a communications spokeswoman for the service who said the callout was “nothing of significance.”

Dubai, U.A.E

Dubai welcomed 2019 with a sensational light and laser show followed by a dazzling fireworks display at the iconic Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

An estimated one million revelers watched the downtown extravaganza, which began with a breathtaking light and laser show lasting ten minutes, followed by an explosion of colorful pyrotechnics just as the countdown to 2019 ended.

Security arrangements were world class, as is expected from a city known for pursuing perfection, with some 4,000 police officers and 2,000 security guards manning the event, making sure everything was orderly.

“We were packed shoulder to shoulder but it was worth it,” one ecstatic reveler told The National.

“It was just such an incredible display and it seemed to last forever,” he said, adding, “It’s already made my year.”

London, U.K.

An estimated hundred thousand ticketholders assembled on the banks of the Thames on New Year’s Eve, counting down the New Year in one resonating voice.

Then the sky above the waters of the iconic river lit up in an eruption of lights and colors to the rhythm of Big Ben’s big bongs, with the London Eye as the centerpiece of the amazing display.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan came under a lot of flak from Brexiters for politicalizing the event with a pro-European Union display that saw the London Eye lit up in the blue and yellow of the EU flag.

Here’s what the Mayor said before the event.

“We, in my opinion, are one of the greatest cities in the world; one of the reasons we are one of the greatest cities in the world is because of the contribution made by Europeans

“I think diversity is a strength and I think what tonight is about is celebrating that diversity.

“I hope that members of parliament, members of the government will see the fireworks tonight, will listen to the soundtrack and will reflect on what sort of country they want to live in post-March.”

The retribution on social media was swift and scathing.

Writer-reporter Anne Crusader called it a “disgraceful fireworks display from Sadiq Khan,” reminding him that “it was the UK not EU.”

New York, USA

While people braved bone-chilling, teeth-chattering cold to ring in 2018, this time around, it was all about standing in a steady downpour as they watched the traditional ball drop at the stroke of midnight, ringing in 2019.

“I can deal with it,” 61-year-old Judy Masson told Reuters as she stood in the pouring rain with an hours-long wait ahead of her, the umbrella ban not making things easy for her.

“You make the best of a bad thing,” said the sexagenarian.

Security was expected to be tight, and tight it was, as NYPD officers in uniform, as well as plain clothes, kept a strict vigil on the ground and on rooftops.

As many as 1,200 security cameras were deployed to help avoid any untoward incident, not to mention the extensive use of radiation detectors throughout the event.

Crowd monitoring with the help of aerial drones was also part of the NYPD agenda and would have been a first in the history of New Year’s Day celebrations at Times Square if only the incessant rain had not played spoilsport.

“We haven’t done that before, but that’s gonna give us a visual aid and flexibility,” John Miller, NYPD’s deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism had said a day before the event.

“This is going to be one of the most well-policed, best-protected events in one of the safest venues in the entire world,” he said.

As for the revelers, the rain was just a minor irritant that they could in no way allow to come between them and the once-in-a-year experience.

“This is the absolute place to be for New Year’s Eve,” Brandon Cline from Atlanta told New York CBS Global. ”There’s no experience like this,” he said.

“I can’t wait,” said Jill Cline. “What we’ve seen so far is just really spectacular,” she told the news network.

“We got in a pen, it was crazy,” said Megan Guerra of Tampa, Florida.

“We stood out until midnight… 15 hours. No bathrooms, no eating, but it was the time of our lives. It’s magic,” she was quoted as saying.

Top Five Technology Trends of 2019

Nothing in the universe is constant except change – if a certain Greek philosopher called Heraclitus of Ephesus is to be believed.

Change is why the world has reached where it is today and where it will be in times to come.

Technology is no different and it is changing at a rapid pace, which at times is difficult to keep up with.

But, keep up with it, we have to, because it makes the world a better place to live in, or at least holds the promise to.

Here’s a look at the top five technology trends that are expected to make a huge impact on our lives in 2019 and would be in our interest to keep abreast with.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science are the buzzwords in technology today.

Data science is being increasingly used in the AI domain.

Machine learning, which is a subset of AI, needs a lot of the skills that a data scientist possesses, such as knowledge of Python coding, data passing, building mathematical models and working with algorithms.

In today’s job scenario, data scientists are one of the most sought-after professionals in the AI domain because of their ability to build complex data models, use the right kind of data to train machine learning systems, work with algorithms, and make mathematical calculations.

Data scientists can also fine-tune the outcome of deep learning systems using statistics, probability and automation approach.

AI and data science have applications in virtually every industry today, including manufacturing, retailing, transportation, finance, and healthcare, to name a few.

So, if you happen to be looking for a lucrative career in this emerging area of technology, you should develop, if you haven’t already, basic knowledge of programming in any computer language, as well as mathematics and probability.

Knowledge of Python would be an added advantage simply because it’s preferred in a majority of AI projects.

Blockchain

Blockchain is the future of the internet and, as the name suggests, it is a continuously growing list of records called Blocks that contain information simple enough for an average person to understand, and they are linked and secured using cryptography.

Blockchain is the leading digital assets platform that records and controls monetary information and is the technology that is used to transact in Bitcoins – the world’s first cryptocurrency, believed to be the future of world economy.

Blockchain does have its benefits though; transparency for one because anyone with access to a Blockchain can view the entire chain.

Immutability is another strong point of Blockchain, as once data or transaction is recorded on a Blockchain it can’t be reversed.

There is absolutely no practical way of going back and changing or editing recorded data on the Blockchain.

Blockchain also promises enhanced security against data theft or misuse; plus, with data made available in one place, transactions can be executed at a much faster pace.

Reduced costs is another advantage of Blockchains.

While Blockchain has found a major foothold in the financial services industry, it is not limited to it, as it has several other potential applications, such as governance, insurance, retail, and healthcare.

The use of Blockchain is growing exponentially and businesses are in need of skilled professionals to gain that competitive edge.

So, to become a developer you need basic knowledge of Blockchain distribution systems; even if you are a non-technical person with basic knowledge in banking and finance, you can start a career in blockchain.

Internet of Things (IoT)

In the technology-driven world of today, Internet of Things, or IoT, is a hot topic.

Thanks to Wikipedia, one of the easiest to understand definitions of IoT is: “The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of devices, vehicles, and home appliances that contain electronics, software, actuators, and connectivity which allows these things to connect, interact and exchange data.”

From smart wearables to smart cities; from home to industries; IoT is making its presence felt virtually everywhere.

IoT applications include smart security solutions, smart home automation, smart healthcare, smart wearables, and in the not too distant future, we can expect to see IoT in city transportation systems, and even smart power grids.

Some of the popular development tools that can be used for IoT include Arduino, eclipse, and IBM Watson.

So, if you are fascinated by the internet and understand the basics of programming language like C, C++, and have a general idea of embedded systems, you definitely meet the major criteria for a career in the Internet of Things.

Cyber Security

In today’s increasingly digital world, the threat of cyber attacks always looms large.

These attacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information, which makes it imperative for businesses to have effective cybersecurity measures in place in order to counter these threats.

Hence, there is a growing demand for trained professionals who can protect systems, data, and digital services from this clear and present danger.

Cybersecurity involves a combination of techniques to protect the integrity of networks, programs, and data from attack, damage, or unauthorized access.

It also represents the ability to defend against and recover from accidents like hard drive failures or power outages.

Some of the top trending cybersecurity technologies include threat intelligence, risk-based authentication, remediation, and IoT security.
Some of the top cybersecurity companies today are AppGuard, Cimcor, CyberArk, CyberGym and Delta Risk.

So, if you have a good understanding of computer networks or communication protocols you can start a career in cybersecurity technologies.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Virtual Reality, or VR, can be defined as the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment.

VR can be artificial such as an animated representation or an actual place that has been photographed and included in a VR application.

Using VR headsets, you can move around and look in every direction, be it up, down, sideways, or behind you.

Virtual reality can be experienced through VR-enabled headsets such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or Google Daydream.

With VR apps you can explore places you have never been to, such as the Martian surface, the top of Everest, or deep under the sea, to give a few examples.

Augmented Reality (AR), on the other hand, is an enhanced version of reality, created by the use of technology to add digital information on a real image or video.

AR apps use your phone’s camera to show you a view of the real world in front of you, superimposed with a layer of information like text or images on top of that view.

Both virtual reality and augmented reality offer enhanced experiences to users and can have many practical applications, like gaming, entertainment, travel, and education.

Here are some of the AR Categories with Examples of their Usage in apps.

  • Augmented Reality in 3D viewer apps like ‘Augment,” and “Sunseeker.”
  • Augmented Reality in Browsers like “ARGON4,” and “AR Browser SDK
  • Augmented Reality Games, including the Niantic-developed “Pokémon Go,” and “ REAL STRIKE.”
  • Augmented Reality GPS, like the “AR GPS Drive/Walk Navigation,” app.

Uber Launched UBER HEALTH – New Ride-Hailing Platform for Non-Emergency Patients

.

Uber may have played its part in addressing transportation issues across sections of society, but it hadn’t paid much attention to what the company itself acknowledged was “vital to all of us: health.”

However, in March this year, the ride-hailing company launched ‘Uber Health’ – a HIPAA-compliant platform, tailored to suit the healthcare industry.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996 to safeguard the privacy and security of patients’ health-related information and data.

Uber Health is planned along the lines of UberCENTRAL, a service that allows the company’s business customers to provide transportation to their clients.

According to healthcare statistics, at least 3.6 million non-emergency patients in the country fail to turn up for their medical appointments because of the lack of dependable transportation options.

The concept behind the platform is to partner with healthcare providers, including hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, senior care facilities, home care centers, and the likes, in order to allow them access to the “Uber Health” dashboard for ordering rides on behalf of patients, to and from their appointment.

Additionally, the company has introduced a platform-specific API (application programming interface) to allow smooth integrations of Uber Health into existing healthcare products.

Uber Health bypasses the need for an Uber app, or even a smartphone for that matter, considering the fact that there are many patients out there who do not own smartphones or those who find apps a bit too complicated to understand.

Uber Health allows partners to book rides on behalf of patients through the Uber Health dashboard and text them the trip details, or call them on their mobiles or landlines with the information, thereby taking apps and smartphones out of the equation

FDA Ordered Recall of Carcinogen-Contaminated Blood Pressure & Heart Medicines

.

In July, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert to healthcare professionals and patients for a voluntary recall of several brands of drugs that were found to contain NDMA-contaminated Valsartan.

Valsartan is generally used by healthcare professionals to treat high blood pressure and heart conditions in patients.

Some of the companies selling these Valsartan-based drugs, which go by different brand names, are marketing products whose Valsartan content doesn’t meet the US Food and Drug Administration’s safety requirements.

The sub-standard Valsartan has been found to contain a dangerous impurity, referred to as NDMA, short for N-nitrosodimethylamine – a substance believed to be “a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer).

FDA attributed the Valsartan contamination to deviations from the standard manufacturing practice for the drug.

The FDA is committed to maintaining our gold standard for safety and efficacy. That includes our efforts to ensure the quality of drugs and the safe manner in which they’re manufactured,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in the July 13 press release.

“When we identify lapses in the quality of drugs and problems with their manufacturing that have the potential to create risks to patients, we’re committed to taking swift action to alert the public and help facilitate the removal of the products from the market,” Gottlieb said, justifying the recall.

The FDA alert came in the wake of a multi-nation recall that saw 22 countries recalling some 2,300 batches of Valsartan-containing drugs, just a week prior to the FDA press release.

In November, the FDA recalled another common blood pressure medicine, Irbesartan, manufactured by ScieGen Pharmaceuticals.

The US Federal Drug Administration said ScieGen Pharmaceuticals was recalling certain batches of Irbesartan tablets because they contained an organic chemical called N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible human carcinogen.

According to the FDA, NDEA “occurs naturally in certain foods, drinking water, air pollution, and industrial processes.”

FDA Approved Swedish Birth Control App ‘Natural Cycles’ for Marketing in the U.S.

.

In August, FDA approved the marketing of a Swedish App called Natural Cycles – a tech-based method of contraception – in the country.

While the app has been in use across EU countries ever since it was certified by the concerned European organization for inspection and certification in February 2017, it was the first time an app-based form of contraception was being approved for use in the U.S

This method of contraception through fertility awareness, however, is not without its fair share of controversy.

In July, an investigation into the Natural Cycles marketing was initiated by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in the U.K., after it received three complaints about the app and its paid ad on Facebook that vouches for the high accuracy of the app for use as contraception, based on clinical trials.

“We would require robust substantiation from any company to support such a claim,” an ASA spokesman said.

To be fair to Natural Cycles, its Facebook page is chock-a-block with user testimonials in support of the app as well, with one woman going to the extent of posting “the launch of a petition against any possibility of the app being banned in Sweden following the Medical Product Agency’s investigation,” the Guardian reported.

FDA spokesperson Deborah Kotz declined to comment on the ASA investigation, other than saying that the FDA expected Natural Cycles to follow the agency’s own set of marketing policies, according to VICE.

She did, however, acknowledge that the agency was aware of the investigation and had even contacted the Swedish authorities in that regard.

Electric Spine Implant Helps Three Patients Walk Again

.

Three patients with waist down paralysis were able to walk again after doctors implanted an electrical device into their spines, reconnecting the severed communication between the neurons in their legs and brains.

The beneficiaries of this seemingly miraculous line of treatment included 29-year-old Jered Chinnock from Tomah, Wisconsin; Kelly Thomas, 23, from Homosassa, Florida; and Jeff Marquis, 35, belonging to Louisville, Kentucky.

Chinnock was the beneficiary of a spinal procedure performed by surgeons at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as part of a study that was published in the journal ‘Nature Medicine on Sep. 24.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-018-0175-7

Thomas and Marquis underwent a similar procedure as voluntary participants in another study conducted at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville, also published on Sep. 24 in the ‘New England Journal of Medicine.’

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1803588

Basically, the study involved implanting an array of electrodes below the injured section of the spine and a pacemaker-sized spinal cord stimulator under the skin in the abdominal region, with communication between the two established through a connecting wire.

The implanted devices were controlled remotely using a TV-type controller that allowed doctors to regulate the voltage and even target specific areas for stimulation.

However, the implants alone could not have achieved the level of recovery witnessed in the patients if they were not backed by intensive training in a controlled environment, overseen by trained professionals, and, of course, a ton of willpower on the patients’ part.

Uterus Transplant from Dead Donor Led to First Successful Childbirth

.

Earlier this month, in an absolute first, a 32-year-old Brazilian woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl – thanks to a uterine implant from a dead donor.

The organ came from a 45-year-old unnamed woman who had voluntarily agreed to donate her organs before her death from brain hemorrhage; she had had three normal vaginal deliveries during her short lifespan.

The transplant took place in 2016, and the recipient gave birth to a perfectly normal baby girl weighing 2.5 kilograms (5.6 pounds) on Dec 15, 2017, through Caesarean section.

The achievement is all the more impressive if you consider that ten similar attempts in the U.S., Czech Republic, and Turkey had ended in failure, although successful birth using a uterus from a living donor has been achieved eleven times in the past.

Despite that, it isn’t a perfectly viable option because finding a woman who would willingly give away her uterus is never going to be easy unless a family member or a close friend agrees to make the sacrifice.

But the latest breakthrough opens the door for women with uterine infertility issues to have children of their own rather than going for adoption or surrogacy options.

Top Five Space Stories of 2018

Ghost Galaxy

.

About a month ago, a team of astronomers from different universities around the world discovered a bizarre dwarf galaxy, named Antlia 2 (or Ant 2), orbiting the Milky Way in the constellation Antlia.

Not only was Antlia 2’s enormous proportions atypical of a dwarf galaxy, but it was so dim and pale that it had gone undetected, until now – thanks to the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite that provided the necessary data for the research team to sift through.

Antlia 2’s dimness, low density and the fact that it is hiding behind the Milky Way’s bright central disk are the reasons why it went undiscovered for as long as it did.

The relatively smaller size of most dwarf galaxies makes them defenseless against the gravitational forces of larger and more massive galaxies in their vicinity.

However, being larger than normal and the fact that it barely emits any light, Antlia 2 is kind of bizarre for a dwarf galaxy.

Researchers attribute Antlia 2’s low luminosity to the gravitational tides of the Milky Way.

Even though the Phantom galaxy is distant enough from the Milky Way to be ripped apart by its gravity, it does get influenced by the huge mass of the larger parent galaxy.

What the researchers have not been able to explain, though, is the disparity in Antlia 2’s mass and size.

With a relatively low mass, the ghost galaxy is vulnerable to the gravitational forces around it, because of which its size should have also been small, which is not the case – something the researchers have, so far, been unable to explain.

Under normal circumstances, the powerful forces of a much larger galaxy would cause the smaller galaxy to lose mass as well as condense, rather than grow.

For now, Antlia 2 may appear to be an “oddball” dwarf galaxy, but if researchers are able to locate more such galaxies, the oddity of Antlia 2 could possibly be better explained.

Parker Solar Probe

.

Earlier this year, NASA launched it’s $1.5 billion Parker Solar Probe on a seven-year mission that will take it deep into the sun’s atmosphere, the corona.

During this period, the instruments-loaded Parker will orbit the Sun 24 times, collecting important scientific data and beaming it back to earth.

If all goes well, researchers should have ample data by the end of the longish mission – not in space terms, though – to begin understanding the mysterious workings of our star, something that the scientific community has devoted decades towards.

Data such as 3-D images, electric and magnetic field recordings, and high-energy particle catalogs, to mention a few, will go a long way in helping them find long-elusive answers to most of their questions about the Sun and its corona.

It should, and probably will, enable scientists to safeguard spacecraft, astronauts, and sensitive ground equipment through improved space weather forecast, and much more, in times to come.

“It’s of fundamental importance for us to be able to predict this space weather, much like we predict weather here on Earth,” says NASA solar scientist Alex Young of the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

Not only is Parker expected to achieve record-breaking speeds of up to 450,000 miles per hour during the course of its multiple revolutions around the sun, it should also be able to get within 3.83 million miles of the star’s fiery surface – which is the closest it will get to it during its 7-year spin, creating yet another record.

The nearest that any spacecraft has ever got was a probe called Helios 2, which was able to make it to within 27 million miles, or 43 million kilometers, of the sun, way back in 1976.

Curiosity Rover

.

2018 was another great year of photos and science on Mars for NASA’s nuclear-powered Curiosity rover, which was launched in 2011.

In June 2018, Curiosity found organic matter embedded in the sedimentary rocks of the three-billion-year-old Gale Crater on Mars, giving newfound impetus to the possibility that extraterrestrial life existed on the planet at some point in its past.

The organic molecules found in the ancient bedrock suggest that conditions back then may have been ideal to support some form of life, with a good chance that microorganisms once thrived on the red planet.

Despite numerous tests, researchers are unable to give a definitive reason for the formation of the organic matter, leaving open three main possibilities.

  • The material had its origin elsewhere in the universe and was carried to Mars in a comet, or other such celestial bodies crashing into the Martian surface.
  • They are the remnants of ancient organisms that lived on the planet billions of years ago.
  • They are the by-products of chemical reactions that the rocks underwent over time.

Voyager 2 Entered Interstellar Space

.

NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft became the second human-made space plane to enter interstellar space after Voyager 1 achieved the feat in 2012.

Launched way back in in 1977, broke through the Sun’s heliopause and entered the void of interstellar space on Nov 5, 2018 – officially announced by the space agency on Dec 10.

While the heliopause is the boundary separating the Sun’s heliosphere from interstellar space, the heliosphere itself is a vast region surrounding the Sun that is dominated by its continuously expanding plasma known as the solar wind.

It is because of this solar wind that objects within this vast bubble of heliosphere, including Earth, are relatively better protected from the impact of galactic cosmic rays that are far more dominant beyond the heliopause – in interstellar space.

Voyager 2 is currently more than 11 billion miles from earth, getting farther and farther away as it hurtles through the interstellar void at 34,191 miles per hour (55,025 kph).

However, it is still 300 years short of entering the disc-shaped inner Oort cloud and another 30,000 years away from exiting the spherical outer Oort cloud, completely beyond the influence of the solar system.

Oumuamua

.

Although more than a year has passed since a cigar-shaped asteroid came tumbling through our solar system, scientists learned a lot more about this interstellar intruder in 2018.

The cigar-shaped space rock was detected by astronomers at the Pan-STARRS 1 observatory in Hawaii, in Nov 2017, during a routine search of the skies for near-Earth objects on behalf of NASA.

The name Oumuamua is Hawaiian for a messenger from a distant past.
Studies based on the observations made during the 2017 flyby deemed it a strange interstellar object.

Rob Weryk, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy (IfA), said, “Its motion could not be explained using either a normal solar system asteroid or comet orbit.”

Further inspection of follow-up images from the European Space Agency’s telescope on Tenerife in the Canary Islands revealed that there was, indeed, something unusual about the object.

Estimated to be a quarter of a mile long, which is ten times its width, OUMUAMUA is dark reddish in color and elongated in shape, somewhat like a cigar, with no gas or dust surrounding it.

According to NASA, “Oumuamua is dense, comprised of rock and possibly metals, has no water or ice, and that its surface was reddened due to the effects of irradiation from cosmic rays over hundreds of millions of years.”

In November 2018, Harvard researchers submitted a paper that suggested Oumuamua could well be a fully operational probe sent to our solar system by some alien civilization.

However,  many experts in the field are skeptical about the alien spacecraft theory, something that the authors of the paper, Avi Loeb, chairman of Harvard’s astronomy department, and Shmuel Bialy, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics were also not too sure of, calling it an “exotic scenario.”

Top Five Innovative Products of 2018

Samsung: The Wall – World’s First Modular MicroLED TV

.

Unveiled at the CES 2018 event in January, Samsung’s new modular TV, The Wall, has the potential to give LG a good run for its money – at least as far as screen technology goes.

The 146-inch screen is based on MicroLED technology, rather than OLED or the regular LED.

It’s no different from the OLED in terms of those perfect blacks and amazing colors, but with 1,600 nits of brightness, it’s definitely brighter.

It’s a kind of scaled version of the technology used in scoreboards and jumbo screens, involving millions of tiny LEDs to create images instead of a liquid crystal layer and LED backlights, used in regular LED television sets.

Samsung says: “Users can add or remove modules to make their TV bigger or smaller, in any configuration, removing previous limitations on screen size, with zero impact on performance of the display.”

We’ve already had a look at The Wall at last year’s CES but only as a prototype. This time around, however, it’s for real.

Samsung began taking orders on The Wall in June, which were limited to businesses, but the company is expected to make it available to consumers, soon.

With a cost expected to be upwards of $100,000, Samsung’s move to sell it to commercial setups first is probably a prudent business decision.

Apple Watch Series 4

.

Announced at the company’s “Gather Round” media event in September, the Apple Watch Series 4 is the first ever over-the-counter ECG-capable device.

It has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Heart Association and can, therefore, be relied on for accurate readings.

The 40mm model is 32 percent larger than the previous-gen 38mm version, while the 40mm variant offers 35 percent more screen space than its 42mm predecessor.

Despite the larger displays, the form factor remains the same as last year’s versions; in fact, they are even a little thinner this time around.

Apple made that possible by shrinking the bezels on the new screens and curving them ever so gently towards the edges to give them a contemporary look and feel.

It also boasts a bigger speaker, about fifty percent louder than the earlier version.

From a performance perspective, it is twice as fast as the Series 3 – thanks to the 4th-generation 64-bit Dual-Core S4 processor under its hood.

Series 4 ships with Apple’s latest smartwatch software – watchOS 5.

However, the most significant new feature that puts the Apple Watch Series 4 well ahead of the competition comes in the form of the device’s heart-rate monitoring system.

All you need to do is press and hold the digital crown for about thirty seconds to activate this truly life-saving feature, which then stores the ECG readings, privately and securely, on the Apple Health app.

It’s capable of detecting a slip, trip, or a fall, automatically giving you the option of dialing 911 with a single tap, should such a situation arise.

The cheapest GPS model of the Apple Watch Series 4 starts at $399, while the Cellular version starts at $499.

Oppo Find X

.

Samsung’s Oppo Find X improves on the main innovative features that Vivo introduced on the Nex, in that it has concealed both the front and the back cameras, instead of hiding just the selfie shooter.

The device’s screen-to-body ratio of 93.8 percent is also better than the Nex’s 91.24 percent, which was the highest found in any smartphone until this came along to shatter its short-lived record.

The gorgeous seamless display, with that amazing screen-to-body ratio, is based on what the company calls a panoramic design – a fusion of technology and art.

The 6.4-inch OLED 1080p panoramic art screen practically covers the entire front of the device, somewhat reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S9.

The feature that makes the Find X really a one of a kind smartphone is the “Stealth 3D” camera tray that slides up and out from inside the phone’s body to reveal a 25-megapixel front-facing camera and a dual 16- and 20-megapixel rear camera setup.

The tray mechanism is activated as soon as you open the camera app; when not in use, it stays hidden to give you that sleek, seamless surface – front and back.

Although the Find X does not come with an under-the-screen fingerprint scanner like the Nex, it does feature a 3D face-recognition technology called O-Face recognition.

The feature is made possible by a 3D-structured light module, also housed in the sliding tray, comprising a flood illuminator, infrared camera, ranging or proximity sensor, receiver, front camera, and dot projector.

The face-recognition module also supports mobile payment by integrating with Alibaba’s popular mobile and online payment platform, Alipay.

The device has a built-in Google Assistant for voice support, complemented by a smart low power-consumption mic with BSP module that ensures high activation-success rate.

The 8GB RAM + 128GB Storage model is available on Amazon for $779, while the 8GB RAM + 256GB version for $922.

Bose Sleepbuds

.

Undesired night-time sounds depriving you of your beauty sleep? Finding it difficult to fall off to sleep after a hectic night shift? Light sleeper?

Well, Bose seems to have the perfect answer to all of those questions – its brand new Bose Sleepbuds.

It may look like a pair of wireless headphones but it is not meant to play music – far from it, in fact.

Essentially, they are wireless earbuds designed to help you get a good night’s sleep while they stay nestled comfortably inside your ears, not on or over them, playing audio tracks that are not only soothing and sleep-inducing but also help in drowning ambient noise.

Weighing in at just 1.4 grams each, and measuring a little over one-centimeter in height and width, these Sleepbuds are the smallest product to have ever come out of a Bose facility, within the U.S. or overseas.

As already mentioned, the Bose Sleepbuds don’t play any kind of music, whatsoever; not by itself, nor from any other external device.

So, stop thinking Apple Music, Spotify, audiobooks, or podcasts, as music is not what the Sleepbuds uses to put you to sleep.

Its built-in miniature transducer is designed to play special pre-loaded “sleep tracks” – ten of them in all – stored on a tiny internal memory.

Although you can’t stream from your smartphone, you can connect through it using the Android or iOS version of the Bose app to control your Sleepbud settings like, for instance, choosing the sleep-track that you’d like to lull you to sleep; set the volume that suits you the best; and even set up your alarm.

The ten pre-loaded tracks are called Campfire, Circulate, Warm Static, Tranquillity, Downstream, Shower, Rustle, Altitude, Cascade, and Swell.

According to Bose, each of these tracks is engineered to provide optimal coverage across different frequencies, so it can effectively mask undesired night-time noises from sources such as loud partying next door, traffic, snoring partner, and other such disturbances.

While a pair of these sleep-inducing earbuds is going to set you back by a cool $249, be prepared to shell out an additional $249 if you happen to be a snorer too and wish to keep peace with your partner.

Lenovo Mirage Solo – Standalone Daydream Headset

.

The Lenovo Mirage Solo is an all-in-one standalone VR headset – meaning it doesn’t need to be connected to a smartphone or a PC to work.

This Lenovo-Google collaboration is what you can call the middle ground option between cheap phone-based headsets like the Google Daydream VR and the more elaborate options that need to be tethered to a PC, like the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift.

The Mirage Solo has a pretty sleek and clever design, with a sturdy plastic head strap that wraps around the head and can be adjusted using the dial on the back to give you a perfect cozy fit.

The orientation of the headband can be further adjusted using the button on the bottom of the headset, making it especially comfortable for bespectacled users.

While the 5.5-inch Quad HD LCD screen is a common factor in most VR headsets due to the fact that they are more vibrant with faster refresh rates, the one on the Solo is built to minimize ghosting and, one has to say, does a pretty good job of it.

The headset’s main USP is its WorldSense feature, which allows apps to track your position in the real world and reflect those movements in virtual reality – thanks to the two cameras built into the front of the headset; motion sensors inside the unit itself; not to mention the combined computer vision knowhow of both Lenovo and Google.

While a lot of people may call it splurging on luxury you could well do without, VR enthusiasts will find the Mirage Solo experience worth the $400 price tag attached to it.

Top Five Tech Gifts for Christmas – 2018

Shopping for the holidays can be really taxing, especially if you’re getting something for someone who loves technology.

So, if you’re still not done with your gift shopping, and finding it difficult to decide on the right product for your near and dear ones, our top five gift choices for this season may just come to your rescue.

So, without further ado, let’s just dive straight into it.

Remember you have just about eight more days to go!

All-New Echo Plus (2nd Gen)

.

The updated Amazon Echo Plus that the company unveiled in September is a regular Echo with an improved smart hub built into it, allowing the Plus to now discover new devices you add to your smart-home system.

In addition to an improved audio quality, the new Plus also boasts an integrated temperature sensor that allows you to set up temperature-based Alexa routines like, for example, turning on a heater, or an air conditioner, when the room reaches a certain temperature.

Also, the ‘Plus’ can be used offline to control your smarthome devices, should you happen to lose Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Echo Plus makes for an excellent gift if you’re okay to spend $149.99 for that special friend or relative.

Sony PlayStation Classic Console

.

Launched about three months ago, the Sony PlayStation Classic – a miniaturized version of the original PlayStation – is the perfect gift to go for if you have a retro games enthusiast in the family or among friends.

The mini console comes bundled with a standard HDMI cable (to hook it up to your HD television), a USB power cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer gaming; of course, that will only be possible with compatible titles.

The console, as Sony claims, is 45 percent smaller than the original PlayStation and will come pre-loaded with 20 games, including Jumping Flash, Rider Racer Type 4, Tekken 2, Wild Arms and Final Fantasy VII, to name a few.

The eject button on the original PlayStation will serve as a virtual swap button on the Classic, allowing you to smoothly switch you over to the next game with a single press.

A cool gift, indeed, but will set you back by a cool $147 unless you manage to land a good deal and save yourself a few bucks on it.

AmazonBasics Microwave (Alexa-Enabled)

.

One of the more interesting devices Amazon presented at its September event is the AmazonBasics Microwave that gives you access to “dozens of quick-cook voice presets, so you can cook just by asking Alexa” – thanks to the built-in Alexa Connect Kit.

The kit “includes a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE module that contains software — written and managed by Amazon — that automatically and securely connects to Amazon-managed cloud services.”

You can also use the integrated Ask-Alexa button for simple commands like “Alexa, cook for two minutes and 30 seconds on medium temperature” and Alexa will obey.

The AmazonBasics Microwave also has an integrated Dash button, so you can quickly order stuff that you use regularly right from the Microwave itself.

This counter-top microwave costs $59.99 and can prove to be the ideal gift for a homemaker.

Fitbit Charge 3

.

Have a friend who’s a fitness freak? Or, an overly health-conscious family member?

Well, if you do, California-based wearables brand Fitbit has just the right product for you – the Fitbit Charge 3.

Even though the Charge 3 looks pretty much the same as the outgoing Charge 2, it does pack some key hardware and software upgrades that make it, well, different.

Fitbit is selling two variants of the new fitness tracker, including a base model with an included silicon wrist strap for $149.95, as well as a special edition version for $169.95 – the additional $20 getting you two wrist straps instead of one, plus Fitbit Pay for contactless payments.

The third-generation Corning Gorilla Glass protecting the tiny Charge 3 screen makes it by far a better scratch-resistant option than the previous edition; much like the Versa – Fitbit’s crown jewel.

While it still has the same black and white screen we saw on the previous model, it now boasts a bigger brighter OLED touchscreen that makes for easier navigation through the menus.

Amazon Fire TV Recast

.

Amazon’s new Fire TV Recast makes a great gift for any entertainment-addict you’re looking to please this Christmas.

It comes with an integrated DVR (digital video recorder) that can record over-the-air television and content broadcasts through an HD antenna.

The company is offering two variants of the Recast; the $229.99 version can record two shows simultaneously, while the $279.99 model is capable of doing four in one go.

This super versatile device allows you to “watch, record, and replay free over-the-air programming to any Fire TV, Echo Show, and on compatible Fire tablet and mobile devices.”

Not only can you watch and record live sports, local news, late night shows, and other unmissable TV from channels through an HD antenna such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and The CW, you can even take them all over the place – thanks to the Alexa app.

TOP 5 WORST ANDROID SMARTPHONES OF ALL TIME

Ever since the first Android phone was launched a decade ago, the world has seen a ton Android phones from different manufacturers come and go.

While there have been many fantastic devices over the years, we have had our fair share of some really bad ones, too.

Here we take a look at the top five worst Android phones of all time.

5. HTC EVO 3D (2011)

.

At number five we have the HTC EVO 3D, which was meant to be a revolutionary phone.

HTC actually put a 3D camera on the back of the phone, affording users the ability to capture 3D photos and videos, and it was meant to be the device’s main selling point.

However, HTC soon found out that there wasn’t really a demand for it out there, as potential buyers saw it more as a gimmicky feature than anything else.

4. Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom (2013)

.

In all honesty, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom was one bizarre-looking phone, if ever there was one.

Looking at it gave you the impression that Samsung had just slapped on a camera on the back of the device as an afterthought.

It was probably the ugliest phone ever made and that camera bulge at the back was just a bit too awkward to put on a phone.

Hence, we’ve placed it on number four on our top five worst phones list.

3. Motorola Droid Bionic (2011)

.

Moving on, it’s the Motorola Droid Bionic that finds its way to number three on our list of top five lousiest phones of all times.

It was the classic example of a product that launched and failed.

It went through two or three design changes, and then a month’s delay, and in spite of all that, there were still a lot of bugs in the device.

There were so many issues with the phone that anyone who owned it can vouch for the fact.

From the very first day it had its fair share of bugs and glitches, including a high-pitched deafening squeal when using wired headphones on it, not to mention 4G and 3G data connectivity issues.

2. Motorola BACKFLIP (2010)

.

The Motorola Backflip – also known as the Motorola Motus in some regions – was released in the U.S. for the AT&T network, and for other countries on Telus and Opus networks.

This idea behind this flop phone was to introduce a novel way of accessing the device’s keyboard by flipping the back of the phone.

It seemed like a good idea at first but, as it turned out, people just didn’t like the concept and rejected it as a gimmick device.

5. Samsung Galaxy Note 7 (2016)

.

And, the winner is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Yes, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has literally blasted its way to the number one position on our list of top five worst Android phones of all time.

The Note 7 seemed like a really cool smartphone at the start and then it started exploding anywhere and everywhere, from people’s pockets and hands to bedrooms and flights.

Here are some of the close shaves people had with the phone.

  • A Galaxy Note 7 owner in Kentucky suffered lung damage after the phone overheated and filled his bedroom with toxic smoke.
  • A Note 7 ignited during a Southwest Airline flight.
  • A Taiwanese woman reported smoke emitting from her phone while it was in her pocket.
  • A 13-year old girl suffered burn injuries due to overheating of her Note 7.
  • A Virginia resident reported that his Note 7 caught fire on his nightstand and filled his room with noxious smoke.

.

It goes without saying, the exploding Note 7 made major headlines.

Not only did Samsung’s reputation take a beating, but the Korean manufacturer had to absorb huge financial losses, as it was forced to recall every single Note 7 it had sold.

However, the company did redeem itself with the Galaxy Note 8 and subsequent Galaxy phones.

Here is another good read for worst android smart phones.
