AT&T Inc. is an American multinational telecommunications conglomerate based in Dallas, Texas. It is the second largest provider of mobile telephone services and the largest provider of landline services in the United States, and also provides broadband subscription television services through DirecTV.
It is being said that AT&T is has bought the crown jewel of the entertainment Industry after Comcast’s $30 billion takeovers of NBC Universal and Verizon Communications’ serial acquisitions of the Huffington Post and Yahoo.
AT&T is a telecommunications giant and with its buyout of Time Warner at a staggering price of $85.4 billion, will dominate the U.S media industry both producing content and distributing it to millions with wireless phones, broadband subscriptions, and satellite TV connections.
The Boards of both of the boards unanimously approved the deal. Most analysts and investors believe that when America Online bought out Time Warner It was Time Warner’s biggest mistake at the height of the dot-com boom.
Communications regulators believe that this deal needs to be looked into as it is simply too big for one single conglomerate to have so much power concentrated in its hands.
Donald J Trump has openly said that he will make sure that the buyout is canceled and he would block the deal if elected President. The T-V industry is fast losing out to digital media and with the rise of online outlets like Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube and the shift of younger customers from traditional media have pressured media companies to seek out consolidation partners.
Declining advertising revenues and drop in cable fees is another reason these media giants want to get bigger. The bigger you are will attract advertisers and service providers.
CNN and Time are flagships of Time Warner seen and heard all over the world and to have them on board will not only add prestige but credibility also for these two outlets are well known for their honesty integrity unbiased and objective reporting.
Content is what really matters and the stronger and greater the content audience numbers will increase manifold. The greatest priority is finding new ways of reaching consumers and generating advertising revenue.
ESPN and Disney are also facing similar problems with Disney regarded as one of the strongest content company with brands like Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm has been grappling with how to overcome challenges facing its network channels.
NBC Universal was bought by Comcast’s for 30 billion which has proved a model for this new world of media deal-making. The Chief Executive Officer of Time Warner Inc, Jeff Bewkes will go down in history as one of smartest in the media industry in the last decade.
Now, Bewkes has found a suitor willing to offer significantly more — $107.50 a share in cash and stock — and done so at a time when media companies are under pressure to strike their own deals. AT&T’s offer represents a roughly 35 percent premium to where Time Warner’s stock was trading before news reports of the merger talks emerged.
Time Warner has a goldmine of cable channels with HBO, one of the most-admired pay-TV channels; Warner Bros. movie studios; and cable channels that include CNN, TNT, Turner Sports, and TBS.
AT&T is on an ambitious drive with this latest acquisition. In 1982 the original AT&T split up and the former so-called Baby Bells t arose from the breakup. The company has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on acquisitions to reconstitute some of its parent’s empire.
That has included buying DirecTV for $48.5 billion, adding satellite TV subscriptions as an additional source of negotiating leverage with content providers, along with the satellite company’s steady stream of cash.
Still, AT&T’s biggest rivals have not stood still. Comcast struck an agreement this spring to buy DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion, adding the “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda” franchises to its media holdings.
The American media industry is getting bigger and richer. It only remains to be seen in the long run which media giant will swallow up the rest. For the moment It seems AT&T has taken the lead.
One really has to hand it over to the Republicans when it comes to and hypocrisy as now it is being speculated that Donald Trump intends to expose and exploit Bill Clinton’s sex scandals to humiliate Hillary Clinton and to boost his falling ratings in the next debate on October 9.
In the first debate, the Donald had contemplated to bring up the subject but he was civil and courteous enough to not to do it as Chelsea Clinton was sitting with Bill in the front row.
So the question is what made him change his mind or rather who advised him to go for it. It was long foretold towards the near of the elections, the contest would get, nastier, sleazier and uglier and it seems we are getting there.
Donald Trump does not respect women as Hillary pointed out in the first debate referencing out, The latin model Alicia Machado who won the 1996 Miss Universe contest of which Trump was one of the organizers.
He later referred to her as Miss Piggy and Miss Housekeeping keeping her Latina background in mind as she was from Venezuela.
Hillary really took the offensive and branded Trump as a sexist which worked with women voters.
Women are the key in the November elections and Trump knows it. It is for this reason that Trump’s advisors are calling to ban Hillary.
What good will it fo if he brings up the past, Will Hillary cringe and feels ashamed, well for this scribe I think not. On the contrary, Hillary will hit back at Trump.
The question is does Trump have the credentials to cast the first stone for after all the saying goes “He who is without sin shall cast the first stone.”
Donald Trump first marriage broke up due to a torrid affair which was the sensation of tabloids at the time. There are many who say that he has no right to wag his finger at Hillary.
For Trump the situation is desperate and he and his cronies are clutching at straws to help him from drowning, Still, the Trump camp smacking of hypocrisy has urged its surrogates have dates to chat about Monica Lewinsky, Gennifer Flowers, and Paula Jones.
The world may be shocked at Trump’s antics but it is not surprising to those who know Trump and his cronies inside out.
Almost all of Trump’s advisors and friends have a long rap sheet of sexual impropriety, as Trump has recruited a pasty collection of older males, mostly with a long rap sheet of marital infidelities, sex scandals.
Let us briefly go over some of the records of Trump’s sidekicks.
Trump allies will be quick to point out that, even as the candidate is again beset by sexism charges, two of his most influential aides are women. Kellyanne Conway was brought on to manage the campaign this summer and daughter Ivanka, alongside husband Jared Kushner, is widely reported to be one of the few people that truly has his ear.
But the broader campaign firmament is less diverse. Here’s a look at the Trump boys’ club and its unsettling record:
Bannon’s has been hired as CEO of Trump’s campaign leaving his post as head honcho at Breitbart News operation, to steady what was then a rapidly sinking ship.
It may be surprising to many that in 1996 he was charged misdemeanor domestic violence, battery, and dissuading a witness involving his then-wife. Charges were dropped but the stigma remains.
Bannon, after their divorce, had objected to a potential school for their daughters because, as she put it in court documents, he “didn’t want the girls going to school with Jews.”
He has fallen from grace in his love or rather lust for women, to put more strongly insatiable lust for women. He was the CEO of Fox T.V who quit due to sex many sex scandals and more which are coming out.
Ailes is now advising Trump on his campaign and it is no surprise that scandals are becoming the theme subject.
Multiple women have now come forward, some with lawsuits, alleging sexual misconduct — a number of them in harrowing first-person accounts provided to New York Magazine and other outlets. Ailes has denied the harassment allegations against him, but earlier this month, 21st Century Fox reached a $20 million settlement with former anchor Gretchen Carlson and agreed to a “handful” of other deals with women whose identities were not revealed.
Ailes’ role going forward is a bit of a mystery, but his presence certainly casts a shadow on any effort by the campaign to make inroads with skeptical women.
Former speaker of the US House of Representatives Newt Gingrich is also tainted as far as women are concerned.
Speaking on the Miss Universe matter Gingrich said that she should not have lost 60 pounds for one of the conditions of retaining the crowd was not to gain weight.
Like Trump, Bannon, Ailes and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Gingrich has been married multiple times a classic example of serial husbands. He has admitted to cheating on his first and second wives — and that he was engaged in an affair while leading impeachment proceedings against then-President Bill Clinton.
Rudy Giuliani — also on his third marriage
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani introduces Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during a campaign event at Trask Coliseum on August 9, 2016, in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Giuliani, currently on his third marriage, is a hardcore republican and former NewYork Mayor who has lashed out at Lester Holt in the first debate for not being impartial and-and now at Hillary Clinton for not dumping husband Bill.
“She didn’t just stand by (Bill Clinton), she attacked Monica Lewinsky, and after being married to Bill Clinton for 20 years, if you didn’t know the moment Monica Lewinsky said Bill Clinton violated her and was telling the truth — then you’re too stupid to be president,” he told a reporter from Elite Daily after the debate.
Giuliani’s second marriage, to Donna Hanover, came to a very public and nasty end back in 2001, as the still-married mayor stepped out publicly with girlfriend Judith Nathan — often bringing her to the mayor’s residence at Gracie Mansion. When Hanover protested, Giuliani lawyer Raoul Felder told reporters his client’s wife was “howling like a stuck pig” in her request to ban Nathan from the home.
Another one of Trump’s advisors who says you can’t rape your wife when it is illegal in all 50 states to rape your spouse.
He said it in an interview with the Daily Beast last year that “you cannot rape your spouse.”
The comment came in response to a question about allegations, made in a deposition during their divorce proceedings and revealed in a 1993 book, that Trump had raped his first wife, Ivana, in 1989. Trump has denied it and Ivana subsequently backed off the claim, saying she felt “violated” but did not want her words taken “in a literal or criminal sense.”
Trump distanced himself from Cohen’s remark and the campaign said he was not affiliated with the political operation, despite his having made repeated media appearances as a surrogate.
Chris Christie -In the aftermath of Trump’s Monday night debate meltdown, campaign advisers have discussed and offered Chris Christie the governor of New Jersey a more important role in the campaign.
The New Jersey governor has been one of the few close aides to offer Trump what a source described as a “brutally honest” assessment of his performance in New York.
Christie is already doing double duty as the chairman of Trump’s transition team — triple duty if you include fending off accusations that he misled the public about his knowledge of the Bridgegate scandal.
Well, there you have it. With such a coterie of advisors of womanizers who consider women as bimbos. Sex machines and what not it is not surprising that they are advising Trump to bait Hillary on Bill’s scandals.
Hillary is no fool, she will be on her guard, perhaps Chelsea will not attend so Donald can not have his day.
It is a very sad feature to see that a Presidential nominee would stoop so low and go to such lengths to claim the white house
To many, it seems all is fair in politics but this sort of charade does not bode well for the image of the United States.
Well, what of Bill Clinton what will he have to say his past is brought out to the public, will he cower and shy away or will he be defiant and hit back. He had as many may recall asked for forgiveness from his family, the nation, and the senate did not impeach him on that particular point.
The World is looking forward to October 9, for it will be a fiery, sleazy and scandalous debate if Trump and his advisors are to be believed so brace yourself, folks.
With only barely over seven weeks remaining in the US Elections the specter of doom and gloom looms large over the US Horizon with the latest incident of a massive explosion which occurred in the heart of New York ‘s city upscale district Chelsea in Manhattan on Saturday night.
According to initial reports , there were no fatalities, however, 29 people were injured , one of them seriously and had to be hospitalized.
Chelsea is one of the busiest, most crowded bustlings with nightlife with restaurants, shops, bars subways and apartment buildings covering the entire area.
The force and impact of the blast were such that it was heard several blocks away. The Mayor of New York city Bill de Blasio in a statement to the press described the incident as intentional but presently no evidence was found of a terrorist link.
A device at a second location in Chelsea appears to be a pressure cooker, according to multiple local and federal law enforcement officials.
The object was a pressure cooker with dark colored wiring protruding, connected by silver duct tape to what appears to be a cellphone.
Pressure cookers were used as explosive devices in the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured more than 260 in 2013.
Police officers and federal agents were combing the area to declare it safe leaving no stone unturned using robots, flashlights, and sniffer dogs.
Another device, reportedly a pressure cooker rigged with wires, was later found in the same district.
Pressure cookers were used as explosive devices in the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured more than 260 in 2013.
Police officers and federal agents were combing the streets and leaving no stone unturned to secure the area and declare it safe.
One victim a puncture wound described as serious, while the rest suffered scrapes and bruises.
The blast according to some reports occurred in a dumpster around. The explosion occurred around 21:00 (01:00 GMT on Sunday), close to a residence for the blind.
People fled in panic from all directions as the incredibly loud blast was heard.
Law enforcement officials said that the device found at the second Chelsea location appeared to be a pressure cooker attached to wiring and a mobile phone. Police said it had been removed safely.
The explosion took place on the 23rd street, the heart of Chelsea, the area over time has shed its bohemian look and is one of the most expensive real estates of the Manhattan borough.
Rich people have moved in bringing in their money. It also has a sizeable gay community with gay bars in the area. A very famous fashion college FIT is in close proximity to the location.
It is worth mentioning that New York City is Donald Trump’s home turf and Hillary Clinton’s adopted turf as she was elected senator from there.
Both the Presidential nominees are in touch with New York City officials receiving updates as is, of course, President Barrack Obama.
In another unrelated incident, a man went on a killing spree in a shopping Mall in stabbing eight people before being shot dead by an off-duty police officer. It is said that the man made a reference to Allah before going berserk. The eight were injured but not seriously.
So the question arises is what does this latest incident portend for the U.S elections just round the corner. The memories of the San Bernadino killings on 2nd Dec 2015 and the recent Orlando rampage on 12 June 2016 are still fresh in the minds of the American people and fear and a sense of insecurity prevail in the nation. Both these incidents have religious connotations as the perpetrators were Muslims.
Donald Trump was quick to seize the moment and blamed all Muslims of terrorism in the U.S.A. He has already spoken about the blast in New York at a rally in Colorado say that the nation needs to get tougher.
Speaking at a rally in Colorado before police had commented on the cause of the blast, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told supporters that a “bomb” had gone off.
The blast comes after a pipe bomb explosion in neighboring New Jersey hours earlier along the route of a planned charity race.
Security has been a major concern of the American people and many will seek answers from the nominees as to what more do they intend to do to beef up the security of the country.
While , Trump is defiant, belligerent and openly accuses President Obama that he is too soft on terrorism as a result of which the militant group known as the Islamic state or IS has gained such prominence.
Hillary, on the other hand, speaks of responsibility, tempered with reason and while agreeing that security needs to be looked at does not have senseless reactions as calling for a ban on Muslims and building a wall to keep out Mexicans.
However, this latest blast in New York City and New Jersey may well change people’s thinking as it is very close to the elections.
Its seems national security will take center stage and other issues will be sidelined as the people are scared and there are no answers.
Donald Trump will prey on their fears and psyche manipulating it to suit his needs and the question will come to the fore again. Can he make America great again or is he bluffing.
Hillary’s approach to the problem is cautious optimism, she does not charge up the crowd with false rhetoric like her rival.
How does this all reflect upon the Obama administration, Will he blamed that he did not do enough to wipe out the scourge of terrorism.
It is true that the U.S.A has the firepower to wipe entire countries but history is a witness that U.S has been engaged in Afghanistan for decades and have not been able to wipe out the Taliban.
Does Donald Trump really believe he can order strikes against Muslim countries where terrorists have sanctuaries without assessing the loss to civilian life and territory?
Hate begets hate, violence begets violence, the more terrorists are killed more will be motivated for terrorism is not a religious problem but a mindset.
It is next to impossible to stop anyone willing to die for a cause no matter how foolproof the security.
So what is the solution ? Many will argue there is none but the solution lies in eliminating the doctrine of terrorism . It must not be forgotten that terrorism is born from economic deprivation, people who are in abject poverty with no hope for jobs or money especially those with large families are vulnerable to be recruited for a terrorist use for they are brainwashed into believing that in the afterlife there will get all the luxuries they could not get in the earthly life.
The solution to the problem is money , billions and billions of dollars by the developed countries to pay off the wannabe Jihadists, bring them back to life, fund their education, build infrastructure, provide potable drinking water, schools, hospitals.
It seems that Hillary Clinton is better suited to address the problem as she has been in politics for over 30 years and has been the first lady, Secretary of State and Senator and experience really counts for a lot of things.
Donald Trump should understand that the U.S.A is not the lone victim as far as terrorism is concerned, the suffering of its people pales in comparison when it comes to the millions of lives lost in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan due to terrorism.
Pakistan is fighting terrorism tooth and nail and facing the brunt of it from different factions of terrorism.
Further warfare is not the solution Mr. Trump, Saner heads should prevail to tackle the situation.
The U.S, elections will be a barometer for change in the global order of things. While Trumps’s politics may make America stronger it will certainly alienate the rest of the world.
Hillary, on the other hand, is a seasoned politician, adept in social graces, skillful in the art of diplomacy and given the opportunity to can prove to be an excellent problem. Her husband Bill was much liked and admired to this very day and can help her in an advisory capacity.
The only setback at this point in time is her health which hopefully will improve with time but given the rigors and pressure of such a high-profile job it will certainly take its toll on her health.
At the end of the day, It is the American voter only who can decide the outcome the U.S elections but as mentioned the security situation is extremely volatile and in view of today’s blast the people will be most concerned about security issues and whosoever addresses the security problem confronting the country most effectively and most convincingly he or she is likely to become the next President of the United States of America.
We live in a complex world, in the fast track lane slogging to meet ends meet ignoring the fact that our pursuit to make our lives better is taking its toll on our health.
It has been duly observed that in our society there is an ever increasing number of people suffering from various ailments such as such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, and autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis.
When people suffer from such ailments they general consult a physician or a general practitioner who examines them and prescribes them medicine for immediate relief or cure.If the ailment is serious the patient is referred to a specialist who in turns conducts tests to determine the nature of the problem.
All this is part of what is called conventional medicine which deals with the immediate disorder and its immediate cure and treatment.
However, Functional medicine is that branch of medicine which delves into the root cause of the problem exploring in depth as to what brought the disorder in the first place.
“Prevention is better than cure“ is a well heard saying or proverb which unfortunately many people do not take heed of. If an ailment and its root cause are detected at an early stage then it can be easily nipped in the bud Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease and is a more patient-oriented approach.
It effectively serves and addresses the healthcare needs of the community in the 21st century.
Functional medicine engages both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It deals with the whole person and not just an isolated set of symptoms.
It explores patient history spending time with patients studying their lifestyles and factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.
In every aspect of life whenever a problem arises it is better to try to discover the cause of the problem rather than just taking care of the matter. Children are told not to play with sharp objects which can hurt them, mothers tend to keep infants and toddlers out of the kitchen lest they are victims of some unforeseen hazard.
Similarly, functional medicine goes for the root cause and it’s early and permanent cure rather than let the effects linger on too long term problems.
There are many who would argue what is the point of functional medicine when conventional medicine does the job easily.
Well, the answer to the question is several. Let we examine the need for functional medicine.
As mentioned earlier our society is afflicted with all sorts of diseases which are increasing day by day, the system of medicine.
There are six core principles of functional medicine which can be outlined as under;
#1 An understanding of the biochemical individual of each human being based on the concept of environmental and genetic uniqueness.
#2 To be aware of the evidence which is patient centered and not diseases centered.
#3 Approach to treatment ;Search for dynamic balance among the internal and external body, mind, and spirit.
#4 Familiarity with the web-like interconnections of internal physiological factors.
#5 identification of health as a position vitality not merely the absence of disease emphasis. Those factors that encourage the enhancement of vigorous physiology.
#6 Promotion of organ reserve as the means to enhance health span not just the lifespan of each patient.
Proper methodology is lacking in the acute care approach to medicine and the tools for preventing and treating chronic disease.
Most physicians are concerned with immediate care and treatment of the problem at hand and prescribe medicines and drugs or recommend surgery as the case may be.
There are a huge or tremendous gap between research and practice by doctors at least 50 years especially in the case of chronic illness.
Most Physicians are not qualified to deal with the long-term causes of chronic illness and disease. And to apply strategies such as nutrition , diet, and exercises to both prevent and treat these diseases.
If you can prevent something unhealthy and dysfunctional from happening in the body by exploring the root cause of the problem in its initial stages then the problem of will not grown at all.
An expert on Functional Medicine, Dr. Mark Hyman, an author whose book was on the NYT best selling list gives a clear perspective on functional medicine.
In the case of cancer, doctors only conventional methods are applied.
Doctors tend to cut the malignant tissue, cauterize it or burn it or remove it with surgery or radiation therapy.
Making a prognosis or diagnosis does not entirely cure the disease. It merely eases the pain or suffering temporarily.
Conventional medicine focuses on naming diseases based on geography, body location and specialty, instead of by the cause, mechanism or pathway
Functional medicine is a personalized model of diagnosis, It involves a doctor-patient relationship which means engaging the patient to discover the root cause of the disease afflicting him or her.
This method enables and empowers patients and practitioners to achieve the highest expression of health by working collaboratively to address the causes of disease.
As an analogy, functional medicine doctors can be compared to soil farmers: They create a healthy soil, so pests can’t come and weeds can’t flourish. A healthy soil means disease can’t take hold. With cancer, a functional medicine practitioner would say that yes, we still need radiation and other conventional approaches, but what else can we do?
How can we properly cultivate a healthy soil? Cancer results because of an imbalance in the system, so many people are walking around with tumors and don’t know it. We can do something to prevent them from growing by maintaining a healthy soil.
The core causes that can result in chronic diseases is explored in a larger context from the functional medicine perspective. If the root cause of a disease can be identified, isolated and treated in its early stages then thousands of lives can be protected.
Cancer is scary and most people when hearing that they have the disease are panic stricken. It is important to realize what works with you and develop a plan to stick with it. Cancer should be thought of differently.
Dr. Hyman has effectively suggested five cancer prevention tips which we will study as under.
# Dump the Sugar:. Sugar feeds cancer and creates diabesity, a form of diabetes associated with obesity It is estimated that diabesity affects ver 1.7 billion people worldwide. The number one thing one can do to prevent or control cancer is to control insulin levels with a high-fiber diet rich in real, fresh, whole foods and minimize or eliminate sugary, processed, insulin-raising foods.
# Eliminate food sensitivities: In a major study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, hidden gluten sensitivity was shown to increase the risk of death by 35 to 75 percent, mostly by causing heart disease and cancer. By just this mechanism alone, more than 20 million.
Americans are at risk for heart attack, obesity, cancer, and death. Dairy and gluten are the most common triggers of food allergies that are linked to insulin resistance. Cutting them out of the diet allows the inflamed gut and an inflamed body to heal.
# Inflammation: Inflammation is the common thread connecting most chronic disease, including cancer. In fact, out-of-control inflammation causes insulin resistance, which, as we now know, is the main factor in all these diseases, apart from autoimmunity and allergy. The insulin resistance then creates, even more, inflammation and the whole biological house burns down. Besides removing sugar and food sensitivities like gluten and dairy, we want to eat plenty of anti-inflammatory foods, including omega-3-rich foods like wild fish and flaxseeds.
# Improve gut health: Cancer often originates in your gut. Not just colon cancer, but with many cancers. We are currently studying about the gut microbiome and breast and prostate cancers. Beyond avoiding inflammatory foods, adding in probiotics, prebiotics and lots of phytonutrients, like curcumin (found in turmeric) and resveratrol (found in grapes), can reduce gut-based inflammation.
# Reduce toxic exposure: The average newborn has 287 chemicals in her umbilical cord blood, 217 of which are neurotoxic (poisonous to nerves or nerve cells). The chemicals these infants are exposed to include pesticides, phthalates, bisphenol A, flame retardants and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and arsenic.
These chemicals have a broad range of negative effects on human biology; they damage the nervous system and increase the risk of cancer, and now they have been shown to contribute to obesity. Going clean and green means becoming more aware of how environmental toxins affect your health.
I encourage you to visit the Environmental Working Group to learn more.
# Change your thoughts: Change your thoughts to change your immune system. This bonus strategy is often overlooked, but it’s just as important as the other strategies above.
Science is now proving what we all knew intuitively – that how we live, the quality of our relationships, the food we eat and how we use our bodies determines much more than our genes ever will. There are numerous strategies to combat or prevent cancer, including getting sufficient sleep, controlling stress levels and exercising regularly.
The above guidelines of Dr. Hyman should be followed if one wishes to remain healthy.
There is an ancient aphorism ‘ Don t put off till tomorrow what you can do today.’
Over the years this has made quite an impact in professional life and bosses place such plaques in the office discouraging procrastination.
Company bosses hark at employees imploring them to use the guideline and get on it but despite everything the problem persists.
What is procrastination, What are its effects both on one’s personal life or professional life?
The literal meaning of procrastination is avoiding to do an assigned task and preferring to engage in other pleasurable activities. This could also imply doing less important work as compared to more important work.
Procrastination does not involve the workplace only, One can put off cleaning the stove, the car, doing the laundry, failing to see a doctor or discussing a sensitive subject with a partner.
According to experts on the subject, procrastination can cause anxiety, stress depression, and self-doubt.
There are several reasons for procrastinating, maybe one puts off filing a report knowing the boss will not be pleased with the outcome, or simply out it off as one is not in the mood or simply one keeps putting it off as one tends to forget in most cases.
Many employees are fired, factory workers given the pink slip, and time is lost due to procrastination of employees.
So the question arises how to control these problems. How to motivate employees to desist from putting off their daily assignments.
There are guides to how to overcome this phenomenon and get cracking again.
Lets us try to study some ways and means to avoid putting off that which has to be done.
All assigned tasks whether in office, schools or factories or government offices have to be met by an absolute deadline which is a curse to many employees.
Failure to do so usually results in grave consequences. Despite a looming deadline, you are engaged in other activities such as checking your e-mail, watching Facebook, looking at the video, and surfing blogs.
The long and short of it being that Instead od constructive work, you are squandering your’s as well as the company’s time.
Many people are caught up in this process throughout their professional lives.
Here are a few tips how to deal with the problem.
First of all, according to experts, we tend to procrastinate because they find the work overwhelming what should be done to break it into parts.
Do the initial work and take a break, if you find it dull then break it up further, and soon you will begin to enjoy yourself. For example writing a book is an enormous task for it involves research, deciding a topic writing or drafting the contents, writing chapters all at once is overwhelming.
A change of environment is very essential to avoid procrastination. People tend to become tedious and lethargic working from their desk and prefer to doze off or relax if one were to change one’s workplace one would feel better and work off.
Set different timelines for work to sum up the total deadline. Having a single timeline gives one the impression that one has a lot of time on one’ hands s hands.
It is better to make a daily checklist of things and set a deadline daily and tell yourself if I do not do this today I jeopardize my schedule.
It is advisable to do way with things that are a source of distraction such as browser bookmarks, your e-mail notification. Block your facebook account etc. and get on the work.
“You ride with outlaws, you die with outlaws ‘ is a saying heard in a western movie. This aptly applies to procrastinators also. If you work in an office environment where everyone has a tendency to procrastinate, then you are very likely to pick up the habit also.
So what should be done to offset this negative aspect? The answer is to seek inspiration. For example, if one were to talk to the likes of say Sir Richard Branson, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates how would one come out of the meeting. Inspired or motivated or morose.
The answer is of course super motivation. So the best thing to do is to hang out with people who are ‘ go-getters’ who truly inspire you to work hard and meet deadlines. Read books about such people and get going.
It is better to have a friend and colleague with whom you can share your ideas. Goals and you can readily inspire each other. An idle companion can be of no use to you for he or she will not help you all to meet the deadlines.
It should be known to all that procrastination has never led to success in life for those who have not seized the moment have let a great moment slip.
To avoid procrastination, one should establish a set of goals with a clear vision. It ‘s nice to take a break, a short vacation or weekend off to assess one’s motives and goals. Think as to where you are and where are you heading. The sooner your goals in life are clear there will be no room for procrastinating.
It is best not to complicate issues such as waiting for a perfect time or anything for there is a never a perfect time. To seek perfection has been one of the greatest reasons to procrastinate.
One must seize the initiative and get things moving or lose the moment do it is better to expedite matters.
The World is averse to all those who procrastinate for companies and bosses want results asap. We live in a highly advanced technological age where the digital world is fast, rapid and changing at a very fast pace. Those who do not keep up with the times are bound to lose themselves in it.
One should also build up one’s mindset as to what to do, how to go about it and how best to cope with the situation.
Although procrastination is not a physical disorder, it certainly has to do with one’s mental faculties for it is quite clear that no one in their frame of mind would like to lose their jobs just because they do not feel like doing their assigned task.
However, putting off a trivial task isn’t necessarily procrastination: it may just be good prioritization!
Feeling tired to get the work also done means that you are not necessarily procrastinating either, so long as you don’t delay starting the task for more than a day or so, and this is only an occasional event.
If you have a genuinely good reason for rescheduling something important, then you’re not necessarily procrastinating. But if you’re only “making an excuse” because you just don’t want to do it, then you are.
We have all procrastinated in our lives on one thing or another. Children tend to put off their homework for as late as possible until their parents admonish them.
Parents put off the demands of the children at times for some reason or another, but this does not necessarily mean procrastination as they have their priorities.
If one has a genuine reason to delay things it may be acceptable but to put off for no rhyme and reason is not acceptable.
Some companies are very strict on such matters and do not hesitate to fire employees found procrastination while others give companies ample time to show cause as why the work was delayed.
In the underdeveloped countries of the world where the standard of work ethics is very dismal Procrastination is an acceptable practice especially in Government offices.
Sometimes one has to grease the palm of officials to get things moving while in other cases bureaucratic hurdles come up.
Procrastination is very much prevalent in the developing countries of the world like countries in Africa, Kenya, Tanzania. Uganda and Nigeria and in Asia countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines, etc.
People should learn that putting off things has adverse effects and does not reap rewards at all.
It does not contribute to the productivity and progress of a nation, and the economy is affected due to these late starters.
Governments of the world should train workers on the negative aspects of procrastination, training seminars and workshops must be held to make employees understand these matters.
In conclusion here are a few famous quotes on Procrastination.
“I never put off till tomorrow what I can do – the day after.”
― Oscar Wilde
“Procrastination is the thief of time, collar him.”
― Charles Dickens
Time is an equal opportunity employer. Each human being has the same number of hours and minutes every day. Rich people can’t buy more hours. Scientists can’t invent new minutes. And you can’t save time to spend it on another day. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how much time you’ve wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow.”
― Denis Waitley
So it is best to make maximum use of your day productively.
The movie ‘Courage under fire” starring’ Meg Ryan was an inspirational theme about women’s role in the heat of battle and their ability to make correct decisions.
The U.S. has always been in the forefront when it comes to women taking up the role previously considered the exclusive domain of men. The rules of the game are changing, and more and more women are assuming roles of responsibilities becoming tank commanders, fighter pilots, and frontline combatants.
For years it was argued that women were not up to the challenge and could not cope in command positions as such.
Women all over the world but most particularly in the United States have proven that they are up to the task to do things previously assigned to men.
It is not only in the armed forces only but also in virtually every sector of civilian life that women have attained and reached the heights of glory as CEOs of multinationals or communications giants.
To cite a few examples, Mary Barra is the CEO of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard, while Virginia Rometty heads IBM, Indra K Nooyi, Pepsico and Marilyn Hewson leads Lockheed Martin. In other words, women have taken up the mantle of responsibility in every field.
However, in the Aviation Industry in the USA women did not make many inroads until the late seventies.
The Aviation Industry had been exclusive male domain as to become a commercial pilot; pilots were required to accumulate a sufficient number of flight hours flying with the US Navy or Air Force, and women were not being inducted into the two services as pilots as they were barred from flying.
Women despite being trained by the Armed Forces and flying sophisticated aircraft including bombers, pursuit jets, and as Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP ) the program was discontinued in 1944
In civilian life, these women flew as pilots and instructors and although highly qualified were not allowed to fly commercial aircraft, American Airlines, was the first to have a female pilot in 1973 and the first Captain in 1986.
The percentage of women pilots although low it is estimated that as of 2010 there were a total 7% of female certified pilots working with commercial airlines. (both private and commercial) in the United States were women. As of July 2014, approximately 5.12% of certified airline or commercial pilots in the United States are female.
Women working as pilots have certain issues which need to be addressed, the first and foremost being how to balance motherhood and their profession.
Most airlines do not have a maternity leave stipulation that is to say that female pilots must go on unpaid leave as and when the baby is about to be born. Some airlines tell their female pilots to go on leave eight to fourteen weeks before the due date.
Four women pilots have taken Delta Airlines to court for discrimination. The female pilots contend that they are can be assigned to ground duty during the maternity period.
Although they can claim sick leave pay and other benefits, it does not equal the full pay that they wish to have. A group of female pilots of Delta Airlines has made a Facebook page for which they are advocating full maternity paid leave.
Another major issue is that female pilots immediately after birth have to pump their breasts for lactation which means that on long haul flights they have to exit the cockpit or flight deck which raises significant concerns for aviation safety.
Although the federal aviation authority has not taken up the issue, it has been said that leaving the cockpit for twenty minutes is not acceptable. Some airline has lactation rooms, but the flight deck of a jumbo jet is not the typical workplace.
Four female pilots of Frontier Airlines are suing their employers for discrimination demanding to be reassigned duties on ground so that they can breastfeed their babies.
A former captain for Northwest Airlines, Kathy McCullogh has e admitted that maternity policies in the leading airlines are outdated and obsolete.
Stepping onto a plane often feels like walking into a time capsule. The primary reason for lack of rules for women is that female pilots constitute only four percent of the United States’ 159,000 certified airline pilots – a number that has been slow to rise over the past decade or so.
The first female pilot to be appointed in 1973 was Bonnie Tiburzi Caputo by American Airlines.
Caputo now 67, says that there was no such thing as maternity leaves in those days as there were no female pilots save her.
The issues concerning women pilots have not be resolved even after 40 years. Policies are set by agreements between the airlines and the collective bargaining agent (CBA).
Delta Airlines has now changed their policy. Subject to doctor’s approval female pilots can continue to work until the end of pregnancy. In other careers, balancing motherhood and the profession is quite different as compared to women pilots.
Some companies have very generous and extensive policies which cater to the employees’ wellbeing and her newborn child.
In enterprises, another point to note is that women employees are in sizeable numbers, so contractual agreements are made accordingly. The problem is also of communication with each other as it has been difficult to relate their work related issues as they hardly get to see each other or fly with each other.
However, that has changed with the forming of a Facebook group FAST —Female Aviators Sticking Together which has almost 6000 members now and another group DAMP or Delta Airlines Mommy pilots.
And the Delta and Frontier pilots know they are pressing an issue that still plagues a group long dominated by women: flight attendants.
Many experts who have studied the issue have opined that female pilots have a very complex problem to handle for the problems lies in the fact that they have joined a profession and asking for solutions when they are working in an organization which did not have them in their minds in the first place.
In the developed countries workers usually have a good working relationship with their employers and more or less all the main disputes relating to pay, leave, benefits and other conditions are mutually and amicably negotiated and settled and workers do not have to resort to violent protest to redress their grievances as is the won’t in the lesser developed countries.
Female pilots are as professional, responsible and prudent as their male counterparts and deserve equal treatment. Initially, they work as crop dusters, or in private aviation companies while they are in their early thirties they get jobs in the leading airlines but at which the same time they aspire to become mothers also and have a family.
So what is the alternate for these pilot mummies? Should they go on maternity leave for a year and lose out on pay or should they engage in other jobs till they get back to their professions?
For female pilots, planned parenthood would be a prudent choice as many factors are involved, the health and wellbeing of the mother and child, as well as flight safety if she opts to resume immediately and conduct the breast pump procedures for lactation on board.
The lure and charm of an airline job are captivating as one gets to see the world’s exotic places enjoy the sights, soak in the sun and meet new people.
However, the job is at the same time demanding, challenging with a great responsibility and at times it proves to be stressful.
History is the judge to the fact that women have never had it easy no matter which profession they chose. They have faced gender discrimination, sexual harassment, unequal pay and many other problems but as time progress awareness and consciousness of rights and duties began to set in. Trends started changing especially in the developed countries of the world such as U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia and the United States.
Feminist groups lobbied their governments for improved working conditions for women and government launched a fair and generous policy for female workers.
It may be pertinent to mention that the next President of the United States is quite likely to be a female and Hillary Clinton if elected and being a woman and a mother will probably do a lot for improved working conditions for working women.
Forty years ago, the airline industry could not envisage that there will come a day when females will be at the controls of a jumbo jet and did not give much thought to things like maternity leave and all.
Trends are changing rapidly and who knows one day sometime in the future female pilots will be entitled to fully paid maternity leave as well as other park and privileges.
Every major project has its safety hazards and despite man’s best efforts with hundreds of checks and balances to ensure that the end product is 100 percent safe and foolproof, there is always the element or risk that may cause problems.
This does not imply that the makers of such products do not pay attention to detail or neglect safety factors, in fact, so much scrutiny and precision are given to security that a product is checked over and over again before it goes off the assembly line.
Automakers, Aircraft manufacturers, communication equipment makers, weapons producers, and hundreds of household and consumer products have to pass stringent safety checks before being sent to the market.
However, it is a well-known fact that Aircrafts have known to crash, cars have been recalled for transmission faults or one thing or another. Computers, cell phones, household consumer items have all failed at one time or another for some reason or another.
The American Space Program by far has been one of the greatest, most expensive and ambitious project undertaken by the National Space and Aeronautics Administration NASA and billions of dollars have been invested in ensuring that rockets and spaceships are built to the highest standards and specifications of safety in mind.
As, far as mechanical things are concerned, it is virtually next to impossible to predict that things will work l with clockwork precision as even the NASA projects were not immune to disaster.
In this context, three major mishaps have to be pointed out to realize that things can go wrong despite everything.
Launched on April 11, 1970, at 13.13 Central Standard Time (CST) Apollo 13 was the 7th manned mission to space and third intended to land on the moon. However, two days later an oxygen tank exploded on board causing the spaceship’s s system to malfunction causing loss of cabin heat, power loss and a shortage of potable water. It was nothing short of a miracle as the world watched with bated breath and-and intense anxiety that the ship safely made re-entry into the earth’s orbit, and a major disaster was thus averted.
Fortune, however, did not favor the crews of Space Shuttle Challenger and Columbia both of which disintegrated in mid-flight the first in 73 seconds after launch in on 28-1-1986 and the latter on re-entry into the earth’s Atmosphere on 1-02-2003 killing all crew instantly on board seven each on each Shuttle. NASA ended the shuttle program on 31Aug, 2011.
In the latest development concerning the space program, an F-9 rocket belonging not to NASA but of a private company SpaceX owned by a flamboyant and dynamic young entrepreneur Elon Musk exploded during a Cape Canaveral launch.
Fortunately, there was no loss of life or damage to property due to the result. SpaceX is in the business of launching commercial satellites in space and transporting cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).
The Falcon X rocket was carrying an Israeli communications satellite which was also destroyed. The satellite was to be used by Facebook for better connectivity purposes in Sub-Sahara Africa.
Emergency teams immediately responded to the crisis and NASA was monitoring the release of any toxic fumes SpaceX said in a statement stated that the explosion occurred due to an anomaly ” during the static fire test resulted in the loss of the rocket and the Israeli communications satellite that it had been due to carry into space on Saturday.
The explosion occurred at Launch Complex 40 at the Air Force station, right next door to Kennedy Space Center.
NASA said that Kennedy emergency staff were on standby. At the same time, personnel was monitoring the air for any toxic fumes. The Air Force stressed there was no threat to public safety in the surrounding communities.
The explosion is a major setback to SpaceX which has far-reaching ambitions which also involves sending a man mission to the red planet Mars with the sole purpose of colonizing it in by 2025.
Local authorities explained that area residents were not at risk due to the explosion.
NASA relies on SpaceX for transporting goods to the International Space Station supplying it food, science equipment, and other supplies.
The explosion will seriously affect SpaceX’s busy schedule as a replacement rocket will take months to build. Moreover, damage if any to the Launchpad has to be taken into account.
It would not be a surprise that Elon Musk takes on lease a rocket from space companies around the world for he is known to be very enterprising and seeking the initiative.
Despite stringent safety checks, it is next to impossible to avoid a disaster of such a nature.
NASA and the US government is very well known to apply the strictest standards and specifications as regards the human safety factor so the next launch when it comes, will be under intense watch.
As for Elon Musk and his businesses this though will be a major setback for the time being but knowing the company’s overdrive to deliver it will bounce back in no time.
Musk, has experienced similar problems with his Tesla Car Model S the autopilot of which malfunctioned and a Tesla car was involved in a crash which resulted in the death of a passenger Mark Zuckerberg, the owner, and CEO of Facebook speaking on the incident expressed his disappointment over the destroyed AMOS-6 satellite, owned by Israel-based Spacecom as it would have provided connectivity to many entrepreneurs and every else on the continent.
Facebook has entered into a partnership with Eutelsat Communications to boost data connectivity to large parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, and the satellite was part of that plan to increase bandwidth.
The dedication and devotion of people like Zuckerberg and Musk speak volumes of the dynamic young entrepreneurs of the times for every setback is a major challenge, and they meet up with the expectations of the people.
In a statement, Zuckerberg said “We remain committed to our mission of connecting everyone, and we will keep working until everyone has the opportunities this satellite would have provided,” he wrote
As for Musk who launched Space X in 2002 for the time being, all does not bode well.
The immediate concern would be how this accident will affect SpaceX’s current schedule as nine more launches are planned for 2016. A rocket costs almost 200m dollars and not easy to replace. Companies will probably cook elsewhere for their space rides.
There are many who will say Space X was moving too fast and needs to be reined in. Will NASA cancel its contracts and cause immense financial losses to the company. It is too early to predict what will happen. However, one thing is sure, in commercial ventures of such magnitude delays Elon Musk, has a difficult task ahead of him. First to secure rockets, ensure 100 per cent safety, convince clients that Space X can deliver. Meanwhile, shareholders will be jittery if company stock will plummet. The shares of Spacecom, the Israeli communications company whose satellite was destroyed along with the rocket fell. The company will be compensated by Israel Aerospace Industries.
Space X has had suffered mishaps before, and its first three launches ended up in failure, however after 2008 when it completed its successful launch it was on the roads to success.
His other companies Tesla cars and Tesla Solar City are doing very well.
With the launch of the Tesla Super X, sales have skyrocketed, and orders are pouring in. Perhaps Musk will divert his Tesla’s profits to salvage SpaceX.
The man as mentioned is very creative and dynamic in his business dealings, His shareholders have confidence in him and have invested heavily in his company.
Of course as is the norm many clients will be reluctant to book orders with Space X but given the business acumen of Musk and his persuasive powers he will win over his customers.
Meanwhile, a lot of planning, restructuring, financing has to be put in place. The company plans to fly its first unmanned spacecraft to Mars in 2018 and send humans to Mars as early as 2025.
The World is becoming smaller and the population bigger and the idea of seeking to colonize Mars has a lot of appeals. Elon Musk is a visionary and a risk taker and although his latest venture has backfired his supporters, investors, and his employees have unshakable faith in him.
At a relatively young age of 45, Elon Musk is going places, and one accident will not dampen his spirit at all for he will emerge more successful, richer and powerful.
There have been many men in history who have taken risks, met with failures such as Edison or Einstein but they never gave up and persevered in their efforts to realize their dreams. Elon Musk is such a man and Space the final frontier.
We live in an age of digital technology or digital information or portal world whatever the fancy parlance or jargon is in the lexicon of the IT.
Everything has become digital from elevators, doors, microwaves, kitchen stoves, washing machines and last but not the least television.
It is the age of Smartphones and apps which can virtually run our lives. A case in point would be that there was a time one used to wake up in the morning and go to the door and pick the newspaper (fast becoming obsolete) to read the latest news. Nowadays, all one has to do is get one’s smartphone and Voila, you have the world at your fingertips.
One click and you have access to everything, online newspapers, TV channels, shopping guides, religious sermons, medical advice, travel information, etc.
One can order groceries, pay one’s utility bills, book flights, play the stock market, work on one’ bank account all at a mere click.
The Net has taken over our lives, virtually besieged us, held us captive especially the younger generation who are very technically savvy and know the ins and outs of working the Net and smartphones.
Many people remember with fond memories the days before the Net invaded our lives including this scribe.
Life was relatively simple, and people had time on their hands to personally keep in touch instead of meeting online through Facebook or whatsApps, Instagram or other mediums in the portal world.
One could happily and easily relax and pick up the paper for some leisure reading, glean the sports pages or movie guide, people went to movies instead of downloading movies and watching them online or on their smartphones.
One would find time to chat with neighbors over a cup of coffee or go for the leisurely walk but now people while away their time in endless chatter on the Net.
The worst aspect of the Net is that a lot of individuals belonging to the younger generation have become totally addicted, intoxicated and stay online 18 hrs a day ignoring their other responsibilities.
Yes, the Net is virtually taking over our lives as except for the older generation it has not spared anyone. People who were born before the Net and have had to adapt to are finding it difficult to balance the act.
Life before and after the connect is completely different but for even those who look upon this technology with distaste or suspicion have to admit that: It has come.”
Bane or boon, the Internet is now, a thing of the present and the future and with technology advancing at breakneck speed one must make an effort to keep up.
The Net is a massive repository of information, a digitalized guide disseminating know how to all who seek it. By some estimates, it has over 2 billion pages, a treasure trove of knowledge.
However, like all things in life, there is a darker side to all this also. Criminals have entered the portal world and engaged in cybercrime, such as child pornography, pedophilia abuse, human trafficking and money scams.
Since there is no regulatory authority and freedom of expression being the norm hate websites against different religions, races, caste has sprung up spreading venom and poison in the minds of impressionable young people.
Prostitutions, under the guise of dating websites, have emerged too, Money scams in the name of charity have deprived many innocent people of their hard-earned money.
So many miss a lot about life before the internet. What does one miss the most about life before the web? iStock Previously. When one could not go out on a trip with friends or colleagues, one would not know what one was missing but now with multitudes of selfies being dispatched in a flash of a second gives one a tinge of envy and feeling of despair.
There was a time when the mail carrier would come, and there was a sense of excitement, of hope that an old friend had remembered you, or a package of photographs or an old flame rekindling the past.
The greatest thing about life before the net was that there was considerable privacy in one’s personal life but with the loss, your life seems to be open to public scrutiny; one feels the eyes of the world are watching you.
A photograph if posted on the Net can be misused if it falls into the wrong hands. The worst case scenario is that there are hackers out there who are virtually capable of hacking into everything.
Bank accounts, personal information, credit card details are all targets of hackers, and they can easily wipe out data at random.
Then there is the method of photoshopping which means that photos can be altered, changed and someone’s head put in someone’s else body just for nefarious intentions. This is more prominent in the case of young females,
Wikileaks is a glaring example of how the world of hacking works. Classified information, government intelligence data, communication between heads of states have all been penetrated and exposed to the World.
What the mastermind behind the leaks is hiding in the Julian Assange is hiding in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for fear of being arrested and extradited to the USA for his illegal activities.
Although the Internet has great usefulness which we have discussed in details, it is how we use it that is crucial. It has opened up and made access to communication readily available as it is not only convenient but cheap also.
Skype is a method of communication that makes it possible not only to speak to someone on the other side of the world but also to see that person on a video screen.
Such technology has helped immensely in providing education to the remotest parts of the world where access to schools are involved especially in Africa and other far-flung places of the world.
The net has brought many people together in life, and people have met their life partners through the net.
These days video link conferences are held by multinational companies, and hundreds of company employees can join in to provide input and feedback.
Video conference has aided medical technology and physicians unable to travel due to time constraints and has helped in the performance of important surgeries.
As mentioned earlier the Net is the greatest and largest library in the World where access to any book or piece of information is just a click away.
It is a great medium to advertise one;s products also or share information with family and friends Music, films; documentaries are all on the Net.
There are some disadvantages that we earlier overlooked, and one of them is Spam mail. This is unwanted mail which is sent at random and uselessly. This causes obstruction to the recipient and makes it difficult to access their email.
Endless and useless advertising material is sent which clogs up the inbox.
An unknown and lethal virus such as Trojan, malware and with other different names plague the internet. The sole intent of this is to destroy the data of the computer. These virus are sent by e-mail as innocuous material. Internet viruses can be categorized into three types – those that harm your executable boot files and system, those that affect a particular file by destroying it and those that keep changing things in your computer like Word files. You can protect yourself by installing a reliable anti-virus program on your computer before accessing the Internet.
The Net has become the easy target for fraudsters and hackers who prey on easy victims so personal information may be kept at a bare minimum.
One must be careful in online transactions, and anything can go wrong. It is advisable to use a reliable payment processor.
There are some people who are virtually intoxicated by the virtual world. They are addicted to it just like drug addicts. This causes harm to health as eating habits become disorderly and sleeping patterns are disturbed. Obesity sets in due to being in a sedentary position at all times.
This needs to be checked and kept in control by parents.
Well, there you have it the debate if the Net is a boon or bane. For some it is while for others it is not. Whether we like it or not one thing is sure. It has come to stay and be part of our lives forever.
Another significant disadvantage is that the Net is that it exposes children with impressionable minds to adult content such as pornography. Parents must exercise restraint and caution when the kids browse the net.
There are no safety valves or blocking methods so the best thing to request the server network to block certain unsavory websites.
Happy Browsing folks.
Broadly defined, the term childcare includes all types of education and care provided for young children. The term is used more specifically for the supplemental care of children from birth to age eight years by persons other than parents.
Childcare plays an important role in the lives of the children as well as the parents. It is an important aspect of their nurture, as it helps to transfer the norms and values of the society to them from their parents or other caretakers. It ensures the social conformation of the children and helps to prevent them from being deviant.
In some countries like China, programs are used to instill societal values in young children such as working together in a collective tradition. Childcare is used for a variety of reasons, and programs vary by the number and age of children, the reason care is used, the preparation and status of caregivers, and the location of the care.
The two major purposes of early childhood programs are care and education. High-quality childcare can help children to flourish, whatever their family circumstances. It can help parents to flourish, too, knowing that their children are being well-cared for while they go out to work. But not everyone has access to high-quality childcare, and this has far-reaching consequences for children, parents, and society as a whole.
Unequal access to high quality, affordable childcare triggers and intensifies a range of income, gender, and social inequalities. Over the past half century, the way mothers and fathers spend their time has changed dramatically. A majority of families today use childcare while they are employed or engaged in other activities.
A number of time parents spend with their children continues to go up. Fathers have nearly tripled their time with children since 1965. Mothers’ time with children has also increased, and today’s mothers spend more time with their children than mothers did in the 1960s.
Married parents spend more time at work than unmarried parents, counting housework, childcare and paid work together, and have less leisure time than other parents. Dads are doing more housework and child care; moms more paid work outside the home. Neither has overtaken the other in their “traditional” realms, but their roles are converging, and a modern man is emerging with a more balanced share of roles between both the partners. Still, there are important gender role differences.
While a nearly equal share of mothers and fathers say they wish they could be at home raising their children rather than working, dads are much more likely than moms to say they want to work full time. And when it comes to what they value most in a job, working fathers place more importance on having a high-paying job, while working mothers are more concerned with having a flexible schedule.
With the increasing inflammation in the society, parents are required to work tirelessly to supplement the needs and requirements of their families, during the course of the twentieth and the early twenty-first-century families have become more child-centered with legal rights for children and other factors that make childcare an important matter in many families. However, the busy lives of parents have somewhat altered the gap between childcare and parents role in it.
Today, if we look around, Mothers often tend to hand over their infants to daycare centers without any hesitation. For the moment it does solve the matter of the child’s safety, but there is a negative impact on the relationship and bonding between the mother and her child. Women in today’s society have a triple shift which leads up to a role conflict. They are often expected to do paid work in order to support the family and do the house chores around the house along with the responsibility of childcare.
The role conflict that arises as a result of a hectic routine like this forces the working mothers in the society today to send their children to paid daycare centers for the nurture and care of their children. Because of the busy lives of many parents today and their lacking contribution to the nurture of their children, we see kids being deviant and committing anomie these days. The lack of respect in children for their blood relations and more interest in social friends is quite evident of the fact. It is also very surprising how the busy lives of many have created such a void in the childcare of the children that parents these days have little or no control over their children.
However, it is also true that other agencies of socialization and childcare have made a point to deliver the norms and values of a society onto the child and ensure social conformation to an extent. They help to maintain a balance in the society through the various sanctions. Today, about 70% of parents place their young children in some type of daily care.
Whether you choose in-home or center-based care, a preschool, or someone else’s home for your child’s daily care setting, you should follow some specific guidelines to ensure receiving quality, professional care. On the other hand, some parents prefer the one-on-one contact an in-home care provider can offer, especially for an infant.
Parents or couples with full-time careers may find that their work schedules require them to hire an in-home care provider for their child. Trying to juggle overtime, business trips, and childcare demands can be impossible without live-in help. If you do hire a nanny or au pair, seek the services of licensed agencies with experience, and make sure you understand their policies regarding caregiver vacations and sick time.
You’ll want to know that if the caregiver gets sick or is away, a capable, trustworthy substitute is available. A nanny is someone who works on a live-in or live-out basis performing childcare and perhaps some minimal household duties related to childcare. Usually unsupervised during the day, the nanny has a workweek that is typically 40 to 60 hours. Many nannies hired through agencies have at least a small amount of training in caring for young children, but not all agencies require it.
An Aupair also provides in-home care and lives with the family and cares for the child under the direct supervision of the parents. He or she often seeks work far away from home, as a kind of cultural learning experience. Au pairs often assist with light housework and work about 40 to 60 hours per week. Au pairs, who usually are young, may or may not have any childcare training or experience.
Research on child care is largely conducted and published in sub-specializations, each with its own perspective, as reflected in the reviews. McCartney describes child care research as evolving in stages; from simple comparisons of children in and out of care to analyses of the effects of quality controlling for family characteristics to examinations of the joint influences of child care and family contexts.
Ahnert and Lamb tend to focus on children’s relationships with parents, other caregivers, and other children. The fragmentation of research by specialization limits the clarity of conclusions from their review. Yet, all of the authors recognize the need for research to become more multidisciplinary and to encompass the broader social ecology if it is to increase our understanding of the effects of child care on development.
What contributes to high-quality child care? The NICHD found that high-quality care was related to the amount of “positive caregiving” provided, which means that caregivers or teachers:
Show a positive attitude Have positive physical contact with the children Respond frequently to the children’s vocalizations Ask questions Encourage the children Sing songs and read books Encourage and advance the children’s behavior Discourage negative interactions
The language used by the caregiver was the most important factor that predicted children’s cognitive and language outcomes.
Of all of these factors, the language used by the caregiver (e.g. making interested comments in response to what children say, asking questions, responding to vocalizations) is the most important factor that predicted children’s cognitive and language outcomes .
However while, Parents cannot assume that all child care centers are of high quality, and should look for the “positive caregiving” qualities above when choosing a child care. The NICHD provides a “Positive Caregiving Checklist” to guide parents in selecting high-quality child care. The media on the other hand states, “Women whose mothers worked outside the home are more likely to have jobs themselves, are more likely to hold supervisory responsibility for those jobs, and earn higher wages than women whose mothers stayed home full time, according to research by Kathleen McGinn and colleagues,” writes Carmen Nobel on behalf of HBS. The media gobbled it up, churning out headlines such as, “Working moms have more successful daughters and more caring sons” and “The antidote to mother guilt.” Justifying the working moms and their choice of sending their kids to daycare centers.
When the economy of a country is in dire straits and joblessness rears its ugly head and local companies are not doing much to cure the malaise, The government turns to overseas investors to come in and bail them out and in the process, bends over backwards, roll out the red carpet to investors from foreign lands.
When the company happens to be the largest and richest company in the world governments welcome them with open arms offering them all sort of tax breaks and incentives so long as they set up the base and create jobs for the local populace.
Free land or at very subsidized rates to set up plants is offered everything is done to make the rich investors happy.
The giants take advantage of the incentives and tax breaks and set up camp and everything is hunky dory for years with no problems in sight.
However, at times the bubble can burst and serious problems crop up. This is exactly what has happened in Ireland with Apple the computer titan being recently slapped with a humongous back tax bill to the tune of a whopping 13 billion Euros (11 billion dollars).
Ireland, which is a part of the European Union has been accused of providing what amounts to illegal state aid to Apple.
Governed by EU trade laws, Ireland, in clear violation of the EU stipulations made a deal with Apple whereby Apple was charged only 1% tax going down to 0.5 % in 2014 while the usual rate is 12,5 %.
EU laws clearly and specifically states that EU member states cannot give tax benefits to selected companies.
This is a very disturbing and concerning news for the parties involved as well as for trade relations between the United States and the EU for it does not involve a run-of-the-mill company but the behemoth of companies.
The revenue sales and budget of Apple are greater than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of most of the developing countries of the world.
The complex investigation took three years to complete and was conducted by the European Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager.
Vestager’s ruling will not go down well for US and EU trade ties with Apple and Ireland have reacted angrily to the judgement.
Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook, has been blunt in his reaction that the ruling
could have severe adverse effects on the job market as companies would now be reluctant to invest in Europe.
Moreover, more companies will come under scrutiny and their tax dealings probed.
According to the commission, the deal with Apple and the Government between 1991 and 2015 had allowed the US company to attribute sales to a “head office” that only existed on paper and could not have generated such profits.
Apple produces a state of the quality products such as Iphones, Ipads, Ipods, computers, accessories and its quality unequalled, Only Samsung gives them a run for their money.
Their latest products in 2016 are iPhone 7, iOS 10, and new Macbooks.
It is being said that Apple avoided tax on all profits from its multi-billion euros sale of Iphon 7s as profits were booked in Ireland rather in the country of sale.
Apple and Ireland said they intend to appeal against the ruling.
The case may drag on for years but if Apple loses and has to pay it will be a windfall for Ireland and the figure of €13bn plus interest is monumental in the annals of EU tax records.
Irish campaigners called for the windfall to be invested in public housing.
The taxable profits of Apple Sales International and Apple Operations Europe did not correspond to economic reality, the commission said.
Vestager said: “The commission’s investigation concluded that Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple, which enabled it to pay substantially less tax than other businesses over many years.”
Vestager suggested other countries, including the US, might now examine how Apple did business within their borders. These other jurisdictions might then claim a share of the unpaid tax from Apple for the same period. This would reduce the bill owed to Ireland.
However, Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, is confident that the company will win the case.
In the 30 years that it has been based in the City of Cork the company generated from 60 to 6000 jobs during this period.
Cook clearly states that the company never asked for special favours or incentives.
Washington will not take matters lightly and may take action against European firms operating in the U.S.A.
The bill in itself is no big deal for Apple as the company sits atop a mountain of cash of more than $ 230 billion in cash and securities held outside the USA.
The Irish government is not interested in collecting the bill and wants the ruling to be reversed because it wants to preserve its status as a low tax base country for overseas companies.
The Irish finance minister, Michael Noonan, said Dublin would appeal against the ruling subject to cabinet approval as the integrity of the Irish tax system is at stake.
This clearly brings to mind that since the EU has so much clout over the affairs of its member states, did Britain do the right thing to leave the union.
The British have their own currency and was always at loggerheads with the EU on major issues. It did not join the Euro family and retained the pound.
The Irish government will hold a cabinet meeting to discuss the fallout of the ruling. The government insists that the ruling will not go down well with other US companies aspiring to invest in the country.
The main opposition party which has a host of ministers serving in the coalition government support the low-tax regime for multinationals because it has created hundreds of thousands of jobs.
Richard Murphy, a tax campaigner and a professor in international political economy at City University in London, said: “This is a great day for the sovereignty of the EU’s nations when it comes to tax. They will now be able to choose their own tax policies knowing another state should not be consciously undermining them when doing so. The Irish state has for too long been committed to tax abuse, unfair competition and secrecy, all of which are designed to undermine fair competition and increase inequality.”
Many will also question that does the EU have the right to impose its stipulations when it comes to the economic well-being of a sovereign state.
It is not well clear which side will prevail according to a US expert Peter Kenny, senior market strategist at Global Markets Advisory Group.
His opinion says that the appeal may be rejected which would be a clear indication that the business and investment landscape for US companies is changing in Europe.
U.S companies have readily invested in Europe because it was an easy way to circumvent a higher US corporate tax code.
The Stock market did not reverberate with ripples of shockwaves and Apple share price, was hardly affected. Shareholders are fully conscious of the magnitude and cash strength of Apple and know very well that their investment is safe.
The US Presidential elections are just round the corner and as Apple is the richest, largest and strongest representative of the economic strength of theUnited States it will certainly come up as a theme on in the campaign trail.
Donald Trump, pursuing his agenda of “ Make America Great again” has already lamented that US companies have gone abroad or outsourced its needs and he will push to bring back them to operate within their own borders .He has said that he will also lower the US corporate tax rate.
His Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, has also hinted that she might lower the corporate tax rate. She has closer ties to Apple than Trump. Cook held a fundraiser for Clinton last in August and this bodes well for the company.
Apple is such a company that countries around the world would do anything to woo them to set up house in their country. It goes to the credit of the man who built the company Steve Jobs and his partners Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne who established the on April 1, 1976, from a garage.
Had Jobs been alive today he would have come up with a solution acceptable to all for the creative genius and innovative thinking he was gifted withstood him apart from his peers.
The ruling by the European Commission is a minor dent for Apple and the amount involved may be described as pittance or paltry or small change.
The reputation of Apple will remain unscathed and as long as they make such high-grade quality products the question of sales slumping is quite unlikely.
It would do the Europeans and The EU well to come to some sort of compromise arrangement or settlement with the company for if you mess with a company like Apple which has improved manifold the economy and job market wherever it has invested, it would not be a prudent move.
