Researchers May Soon Have a Definitive Cure for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, more commonly known by its short form PCOS, is a hormonal imbalance that affects fertility among women of reproductive age; as a matter of fact, it is the most common cause of female infertility throughout the world.

“It’s by far the most common hormonal condition affecting women of reproductive age, but it hasn’t received a lot of attention,” Robert Norman – Professor of Reproductive and Periconceptual Medicine the Robinson Institute at the University of Adelaide, Medical Director, as his Linkedin profile reads – told the New Scientist.

The good news is that a recent study conducted by researchers at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research suggests that a possible cure may be just around the corner, so to speak.

The team discovered that the onset of the syndrome is, perhaps, triggered before birth by an imbalance of a hormone known as anti-Müllerian (AMH), which recalibrates the fetus in a way that induces Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in adulthood.

Their findings showed that pregnant women afflicted with PCOS have as much as 30 percent higher levels of AMH than normal, and as the syndrome tends to be hereditary, the researchers wanted further proof of their conviction that the imbalance was likely to be passed on to the female child.

So, the team ran some tests on pregnant mice, injecting them with anti-Müllerian hormone and observing their female offspring as they grew up, to find that a large majority of them displayed symptoms of the dreaded syndrome, including “delayed vaginal opening, delayed puberty onset, severely disrupted estrous cyclicity” – which, basically means grossly irregular reproductive cycle – “impaired fertility and “no difference in body weight.”

The presence of excess AMH in the mice, apparently, over-stimulated a group of brain cells that cause testosterone levels to rise abnormally, which, in turn, triggered the onset of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

The team then treated the affected mice with cetrorelix – a common IVF drug used to control hormones in women – and the results were very encouraging, indeed, as the mice stopped showing PCOS-related symptoms.

Obviously, with results as heartening as this, the team is now looking to take it to the next level by starting clinical trials of the drug on women suffering from PCOS, sometime later this year.

“It could be an attractive strategy to restore ovulation and eventually increase the pregnancy rate in these women,” Paola Giacobini, who is part of the research team, told New Scientist.

More about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome symptoms are triggered by elevated levels of androgens, or male hormones, like testosterone.

Some of the signs that point toward the syndrome may include irregular menstrual cycle, heavy or no menstrual periods, pain in the pelvic area, conception issues, dark skin patches, and even excess body and facial hair.

Related symptoms may include Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which, basically, means breathlessness during sleep, mood swings, heart ailments, type2 diabetes, and even endometrial cancer, or cancer of the uterus lining.

Now that we know that elevated levels of testosterone somehow trigger the PCOS symptoms, you might want to ask what causes the male hormone to increase in the first place.

Well, it’s the result of a combination of hereditary and environmental factors, such as obesity, lack of physical activity, and history of PCOS within the family.

Diagnosis is based on two of these three test results: high testosterone, ovarian cysts, and no ovulation.

Women with PCOS are more likely to get pregnant in their late thirties and early forties because of the simple fact that AMH levels are known to reduce with age, which effectively means that these women get back closer to normal fertility as the anti-Müllerian hormone levels in the body decline.

Looks Like Chris Evans and Jenny Slate Have Resurrected Their Romance

Going by the tweets from both parties in recent weeks, it would seem that Chris Evans and Jenny Slate are on their way back into each other’s arms, having split in February after a brief nine-month relationship.

A series of flirtatious tweets starting last month are strong pointers, if not hard evidence, to the revival of relationship between 36-year-old Captain America and comedian actress Jenny Slate, 35.

All remaining doubts in the minds of fans and followers of a possible resumption of dialogue, if you will, between the estranged couple, should have been put to rest with Slate’s Friday tweet. Here’s what it says:

“My boyfriend does many dreamy&generous things but number 1 in my mind right now is how he celebrates my new turtlenecks/let’s me show him my online shopping spoils&cheers me on,” wrote the comedian. Well, in the light of earlier tweets by the two, it won’t take a rocket scientist to work out who that lucky boyfriend is.

Now let’s take a look at what got the rumor mills in such a tizzy these past few weeks.

Here’s an exchange of tweets between the two from last month that started it all.

The tweets below may seem absolutely irrelevant at first glance, but a closer look will show that Slate had been lovingly generous with her LIKES to everything Captain America has recently dropped.

However, the same can’t be said about her hunky man who doesn’t have his twitter LIKES visible to the public.

And if that was not enough, this one below should absolutely nail it.

On Tuesday, Evans shared a cute video of his dog Dodger playing with a stuffed lion with a Lion King song playing in the background.

However, what captures your interest in this seemingly inconsequential video is a woman’s laughter in the background; if you have heard Slate before, you’d be pretty much convinced it couldn’t be anybody else but her, giggling behind the scene.

A month, or so, after they broke up in February this year, the “Gifted” star was quite candid about Evans and their split in a March issue of New York magazine.

“Chris is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, to the point where sometimes I would look at him and it would kind of break my heart,” she said. “He’s really vulnerable, and he’s really straightforward. He’s like primary colors. He has beautiful, big, strong emotions, and he’s really sure of them. It’s just wonderful to be around. His heart is probably golden-colored if you could paint it,” she further explained.

“When Chris and I started dating, my husband and I had only been separated for a couple of months,” she explained. “Even though we had an amicable divorce, I think that’s still something that you need to mourn. When you get separated from somebody that you actually care about, it is the destruction of a belief system. That is really, really sad. I just didn’t have the tools. And I didn’t think very hard about that, to be honest,” the beloved comedian said.

Despite a parting agreement between them that they would not speak to each other again, she was hopeful all that would change.

“I’d love to be his friend one day,” she had confessed. “But we threw down pretty hard. No regrets, though. Ever.

Well, it seems things are working out better than she had hoped for.

Having witnessed the death of several celebrity relationships this year, including Chris Pratt and Anna Faris, Josh Duhamel and Fergie, and, most recently, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd (there’s a chance of a revival here as well), we sincerely hope that their relationship not only stays this way but reaches even more milestones.

Tesla and SolarCity Merger Announced

Ever since the proposal of the merger was made public by Tesla in June, it had been a hot topic of discussion among Tesla shareholders. They had some uncertainty and apprehensions about Tesla adding additional liability to the company’s resources by buying out SolarCity which was in an increasingly slowdown phase.

However, in the intervening months, Tesla CEO Elon Musk managed to convince shareholders of the advantages he envisioned in the merger. This was made evident, on Thursday, by the margin of approval with which Tesla shareholders supported the merger; it was a whopping 85%.

Earlier in the month both sides had made the point that “SolarCity was on solid financial footing and wouldn’t drain Tesla’s resources.” The following statement was sent out by the Tesla as shareholders from both sides gave their collective nod to the merger:

“Tesla’s shareholders have overwhelmingly approved our acquisition of SolarCity,” said a statement from Tesla. “Excluding the votes of Elon and other affiliated shareholders, more than 85% of shares voted were cast in favor of the acquisition. With SolarCity’s shareholders also having approved the acquisition, the transaction will be completed in the coming days.”

The company is said to have acquired SolarCity at a cost of $2.6 billion. The merger is expected to be beneficial to shareholders from both sides. It is believed that merging the two companies into one entity would yield a “green-energy company” as their products complement each other – Tesla manufactures electric cars while SolarCity is, arguably, the largest supplier of solar panels in America.

“We would like to thank our shareholders for continuing to support our vision for the future,” Tesla said in a statement. “We look forward to showing the world what Tesla and SolarCity can achieve together.”

The billionaire founder of both companies believes the deal would provide better revenue for the two in the next three years
The billionaire founder of both companies believes the deal would provide better revenue for the two in the next three years

Following the announcement, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in a question and answer session, announced the company’s plans of starting bulk production of solar roof sometime in 2017. The company intends to manufacture the panels in different varieties and introduce each variety in three-month intervals.

Musk made it clear that costs, would take into consideration the size of the house and installation logistics and may, therefore, vary. “The important thing is that the apples-to-apples comparison compared to a regular roof will be at least at, and we believe slightly below the cost of a regular roof, and the electricity is just a bonus,” is what Elon Musk said, going on to add it would include labor costs but not any money from subsidies.

Tesla anticipates that the acquisition of SolarCity would result in an additional $500 million cash in the company books over a period of three years. The merger has caused split opinion among investors and analysts. Out of the 15% that voted against the deal, some Tesla shareholders are reported to have filed lawsuits against the merger.

GTM research’s ‘Global Solar Demand Monitor’ has predicted that the solar power business will decline by 7% next year. On the other hand, Institutional Shareholder Services, which advises mutual funds and other institutional shareholders on investment and related matters, ‘recommended the investors vote in favor of the deal.’

They are reported to have said, the merger “a necessary step toward TSLA’s goal of being an integrated sustainable energy company.”

Despite apprehensions from certain quarters, “In our opinion, investor focus will return to the ramp of the Gigafactory, Model S and X production, and the ramp of Model 3 production, and we believe shares will move higher with execution,” Analyst Ben Kallo at Robert W. Baird wrote in a message to clients.

Uterus Transplants From Living Donors at Baylor University Medical Centre, Dallas

Wonders never cease to exist, especially the wonders of modern science for as technology and medical research advances at a phenomenal pace, newer and more effective methods are being discovered. Doctors have made immense strides in all branches of medicine.

The first heart transplant was done by Dr. Christian Bernard, a South African and American-trained doctor. However, The patient died after 18 days.

Ever since then heart transplants, bone marrow, liver and kidney transplants have become a common practice in medical science and thousands of lives have been saved in the process.

Now, In a sensational and revolutionary step, and what can best be described as wonderful news for women who can’t bear children, doctors have experimented in womb transplant in the USA.

Four women have successfully received new wombs from living donors at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. This is the first time living-donor womb transplants have been performed in the United States.

Of the four surgeries which took place between Sept. 14 and Sept. 22, three of the womb transplants were removed after tests determined the organs were not receiving normal blood flow. One woman still has her transplanted uterus and has shown no signs of rejection so far.

Uterus transplants with live donors will go a long way in reproductive medicine as it is proving very successful. Sweden was the pioneer to start this and in five out of nine cases recipients have given birth to healthy babies and one woman is pregnant for the second time.

Some women suffer from what is known as Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome and are born without a uterus. About one in 4,500 women in the U.S. are estimated to suffer from this.

Dr. Giuliano Testa, the lead surgeon and surgical chief of abdominal transplantation at Baylor, acknowledges that despite the fact that these results so far, while disappointing, still show tremendous progress.

From the science perspective, indeed this is a great day for mothers to be for it will give hope to many who thought they would never have a child.

This is the second time a hospital in the U.S. has attempted womb transplants. In February, the Cleveland Clinic performed the first uterus transplant in the U.S.; the organ was from a deceased donor. Less than two weeks after the transplant, the recipient, Lindsey McFarland, acquired an infection and the transplant had to be removed.

The Cleveland Clinic then put its program on pause.s transplants are estimated to cost from $150,000 to over $500,000, and since they are still experimental, they are not usually covered by insurance.

Shannon Faulk—Baylor University Medical Center From left to right: Dr. Greg McKenna, Dr. Giuliano Testa, Dr. E. Colin Koon, and Dr. Liza Johannesson perform a womb transplant surgery at Baylor University Medical Center on Sept. 14, 2016.

The procedure is very complicated and lengthy as it took about five hours for the wombs to be removed from the donors, and another five to transplant.

Besides the four surgeons of Baylor, the team was supported by two Swedish surgeons with womb transplant experience, two anesthesiologists, and seven operating room nurses.

The two Swedish doctors were from Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg and were of the first surgical team in the world to perform successful womb transplants.

They wanted to share their experience and assist other teams throughout the world. Dr. Liza Johannesson, one of the doctors from Sahlgrenska University Hospital who assisted Baylor with their surgeries. “If no one can repeat it, it’s not worth anything. We owe it to the patients to be open.” Johannesson says her team will continue to assist Baylor with further womb transplant procedures.

It is estimated that it will take the women about three months to get back to normal daily activity. In six to 12 months, a woman with a successful uterus transplant can attempt in vitro fertilization (IVF).

(Since the women’s ovaries are not connected to their wombs, IVF is required if she wants to get pregnant.) Because all organ transplants require recipients to take extremely powerful anti-rejection injections and typically, the uterus is removed after they’ve had two children.

Despite the setback Dr. Testa is determined to carry out operations and they plan to conduct 10 experiments .The Baylor team is assessing the results from the first four surgeries before moving forward with the other six.

This is indeed a major breakthrough in reproductive science and with time such dedicated and sincere doctors will eventually become successful giving great hopes to mothers to be all over the world.

Zuckerberg’s are Saviours of Humanity

There are many people in this world who have made a lot of money in life, not to the tune of millions but billions and have contributed a major portion of their wealth to the cause of noble and worthy deeds.

These people have a heart of gold and god has blessed them with an untold bounty for their foremost interest has always been for the good of mankind.

They have donated money to education, scientific research, charitable causes, eradication of diseases, housing, tackling famine, Floods, earthquakes and other natural calamities.

A case in point is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has contributed a 100 million dollars for the eradication of polio in the world.

Warren Buffet, the third-richest person in the world has recently given away 2.90 billion dollars to the Gates foundation in the form of stock shares .

Warren Buffett
Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett, the billionaire chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has donated another roughly $2.86 billion of his holdings in the company’s stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four family charities, as part of his plan to give away nearly his entire fortune.

Buffet has since 2006 contributed a total of 24.3 billion dollars to charity.

The Gates Foundation focuses on improving education and health received 14.96 million shares of the company.

Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has known Buffett for a quarter century and counts him as a close friend. He is also a Berkshire director.

Buffett typically makes his donations in July, reducing the number of shares by 5% from the prior year.

In yet another development with regard to charitable causes and what can be described as one of the greatest and noblest deeds ever, the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and his wife Priscilla Chan have pledged $ 3 billion dollars to rid the world of all diseases by the end of the century.

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan aim to cure all diseases
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan aim to cure all diseases

The couple has set up the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative to “cure, prevent or manage all disease” by the end of the century which was announced at a news conference at UCSF Mission Bay in San Francisco.

So the question is how do they intend to go about it? How does one get rid of all the malaise in the world?

The 3 billion dollars will go into scientific research to initiate a medical revolution, creating scientific tools based on traditional science and engineering on which all researchers can develop a map of all cell types, a way to monitor blood constantly to detect any signs of early disease.

The Noble couple envisions that all diseases are eradicated by the turn of the century.

The money will also help fund what they referred to as 10 to 15 “virtual institutes” that will bring together investigators from around the world to focus on individual diseases or other goals — an idea that has the potential to upend biomedical science.

Presently being a scientist in academia today can often be a solitary endeavor as the system is set up to encourage colleagues to keep data exclusive in the hopes that this strategy helps them be more competitive at getting publications and grants.

But now the trend will change, and with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs like Zuckerberg who are seeking to make their mark in the biological sciences, the power of collaboration and openness is being encouraged.

A “Biohub” will be created in an effort call Chan-Zuckerberg Science at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Mission Bay campus that will bring together scientists from Stanford, the University of California at Berkeley and UCSF.

The long-term vision of Zuckerberg and Chan, ranked among the world’s 10 wealthiest couples, with a net worth of $55.2 billion, is truly commendable and the world should rise to salute this couple.

Advising patients, the young husband, and wife are well aware that their effort does not mean that all diseases will be eradicated in the world but it will certainly ensure that there is a considerably less sickness in the world.

The Zuckerbergs are not alone in their effort in such a worthy cause. Sean Parker, a Napster co-founder has also donated some 250 million dollars to band together a team of top researchers from around the country to focus on immunotherapy for cancer.

Microsoft’s Paul Allen has already invested $100 million in a cell biology institute to try to create models of the fundamental building blocks of life.

It was unclear how those efforts would collaborate with Chan-Zuckerberg Science, if at all.

Zuckerberg in a magnanimous gesture gave credit to his wife Chan for having guided him on this route. Chan who is a pediatrician, by profession who stole the limelight.

It was a public debut for Chan as she was first and last on stage and in sharp contrast to the robotic presentations there was a human touch to the presentation at such announcements she was moved to tears when talking about the soul-searching that led to the project.

She poignantly recounted what it was like to tell a parent that a child has the devastating diagnosis of leukemia or tell a family that doctors had not been able to resuscitate their child which moved the audience and herself to tears.

“In those moments and at many others, we are at the limit of what we understand about the human body and disease, the limit of our ability to alleviate suffering. We want to push back that boundary,” Chan said.

Chan, who met Zuckerberg when they were students at Harvard and married him in 2012, is a very private and reclusive person for she keeps to herself.

Despite being a billionaire’s wife who could go globetrotting and spend lavishly on the good things in life she shuns media appearances, launch events, and other public and social engagements.

Instead, she preferred to attain her medical degree in 2012, do her residency at UCSF and continues to work as a Pediatrician at San Francisco General. It is no easy sailing to become a doctor in the U.S.A and Chan could have given it all up after marriage but being a strong and humane person she has chosen her path in life.

Philanthropy comes naturally to the Zuckerbergs, During those years, the couple began to ramp up their philanthropy with a mix of traditional grants — $5 million to UCSF Children’s Hospital, $75 million for San Francisco General Hospital, $25 million to the CDC Foundation to fight Ebola — along with a few less conventional projects.

They contributed 100 million dollars to reform the struggling Newark school system but the money was squandered by local politicians’ mismanagement. However, this did not deter the couple but rather motivated them as a lesson and later they gave away 120 million dollars to the San Francisco Bay area and said that they looked at the failures in New Jersey as a learning opportunity.

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla-chan with their daughter max
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan with their daughter Max

Max Chan-Zuckerberg is held by her parents, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and his wife announced the birth of their daughter, Max, as well as plans to donate most of their wealth to a new organization that will tackle a broad range of the world’s ills.

The couple is more than human as they are serving humanity in such a way they could be best described as god’s angels on earth for their purpose is do good and nothing but good in this world pledging another 45 billion to the world. The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative makes their previous grants pale in comparison.

She is now an integral part off of the billionaire spouses philanthropic society or sorority along with Melinda Gates, Microsoft’s Bill Gates wife, for her work with global and women’s health issues. Cari Tuna, a former journalist for the Wall Street Journal and wife of another Facebook co-founder, Dustin Moskovitz, has taken the lead on the couple’s philanthropy.

And Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Steve Jobs of Apple, has recently started to make inroads with efforts in education as well as global conservation and immigration policy.

It is a well-known fact that most people die from five things — heart disease, cancer, stroke, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases — and we can make faster progress on these and other problems.

Once we recognize that your generation and your children’s generation may not have to suffer from the disease, we collectively have a responsibility to tilt our investments a bit more towards the future to make this reality. Your mother and I want to do our part.

In formulating their plan for Chan-Zuckerberg Science, the couple said they consulted with numerous scientists and philanthropists, including Gates, who appeared on stage Wednesday to praise the couple’s “risk-taking,” and National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins, whom Zuckerberg credited with pushing them to view the problem through the lens of computer science.

Cori Bargmann, a neuroscientist, was named a president of science at the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative.

The new effort will be led by Cori Bargmann, a neuroscientist at Rockefeller University who was co-chair of President Obama’s BRAIN Initiative and is expected to eventually include thousands of researchers throughout the world.

Bargmann said in an interview that the list of target projects is still being worked out but that one major effort will involve infectious diseases.

Zika, Ebola, and other fatal diseases will be tackled on a war footing . Medical Research will be conducted from all over the world.

All one can say that the world should rise and salute the Zuckerberg for they given a whole new meaning to humanity and philanthropy.

The world is indeed blessed to have people like them n the planet.

Their was a fairy-tale romance which many thought would last happily ever after. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were married and divorced twice, and their union was probably the most notorious and dramatic of the 20th century.

Consumed with a passion for each other, their first on-screen kiss lasted so long that the director had to ask them whether he could say ‘cut’. They carried on kissing.

They pursued a lavish lifestyle jet-setting across the globe with worthy of Hollywood’s most famous couple yachts, private jets, glittering parties and, of course, jewels.

It is said that Richard once paid more than $1 million dollars for a diamond necklace for his wife, thereafter dubbed The Taylor-Burton Diamond.

In August, it was announced that they were in love again, and the pair remarried in October. But within weeks, they fell back into their old habit of fighting and making up.

They began sleeping in separate bedrooms, and Richard soon found himself enraptured with another woman, his future wife, Suzy Hunt.

Elizabeth and Richard remained obsessed with one another, however. Before his death, Richard supposedly said of his ex-wife to a friend ‘she still fascinates, you know’.

Elizabeth, too, remained devoted to him. As an older woman, she reportedly said that, had Richard lived, she was sure they would have married again.

Their love was the kind that does not die. Explaining why they couldn’t make it work, Elizabeth once said: ‘Maybe we loved each other too much.’
